2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Buying into what Kevin Slowey is selling?
(Phillip from South Bend)
Always been a favorite of mine http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=20429 (Paul Sporer)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Sure looks like Kevin Slowey is in Gardy's doghouse, and could be on his way out of Minny via trade. What sort of return could they expect?
(PepeShady from StP)
He's an extreme fly-ball pitcher already playing in a great pitchers' park, so he should be nice to Gardy and get out of Chateau Bow-Wow! I'd be leery of him in a neutral or hitter-friendly park. As for what they'd get in return, I would imagine a mid-tier prospect or two, given his limitations and arbitration eligibility (which means he's going to start getting expensive). (Cory Schwartz)
2010-02-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you name some players you have interviewed who seem to be well-read? I don't mean players who read, I mean players who have likely read and enjoyed Hemingway or Faulkner?
(marmour from Corvallis OR)
Fernando Perez is an obvious answer. Gabe Kapler, certainly. I'd have to think about it a little to really pull out a bunch of names, but not because there aren't a number of players who are well read. Many are. There are some smart guys out there and a lot of plane rides -- bus rides in the minors -- and they don't all read comic books. Craig Breslow. Kevin Slowey. As I type, I find myself wondering what Lastings Millege reads. He struck me as being thoughtful when I spoke to him last summer, so he may be into things far different than what his image conveys. (David Laurila)
2009-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Marc, thanks for your great work. I'm in a league where the only pitching stats that count are innings pitched and runs allowed. Who is better to target: Kevin Slowey or Joba? I think Slowey will throw more innings, but Joba will probably allow fewer runs. Thanks!
(DS from Monterey Park, CA)
Hit the upside there and go with Joba. I like Slowey, but if Joba does what we expect him to, you win. (Marc Normandin)
2008-05-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a standard 5x5 league, I've got a lot of pitchers coming off the DL soon (Smoltz, Pedro, and Peavy). I'm going to have to drop one of Jonathan Sanchez or Kevin Slowey. Which would you recommend?
(Rob from Bloomington, IL)
I like Sanchez because of the strikeouts, and I've been advocating acquiring him for most of the season if he's available. Slowey's numbers aren't going to look as pretty when his line drive rate climbs back up towards the mean. (Marc Normandin)
