2017 Cut loose by the Brewers following a 2015 wrecked by injury, Kintzler failed to make the Twins’ bullpen out of spring training as a non-roster invite...and finished the season as their closer. He’s not really suited for that role, but Kintzler’s heavy, low-90s fastball generates grounders in bunches and he really committed to pounding the strike zone. Among all relievers with 50-plus innings, only Andrew Miller and Deolis Guerra had a lower walk rate, and Kintzler ranked eighth in groundball percentage. Prior to the knee and shoulder problems, Kintzler had a 3.08 ERA for the Brewers from 2011-2014, and while he’s BABIP dependent, it’s a skill set that should fit nicely in middle relief.
2015 As the Brewers' bullpen imploded down the stretch, Kintzler complained he wasn't getting high-leverage looks. Okay, we'll bite. He finished the year with a 3.24 ERA, which ranked third among Brewers relievers with 50 innings. The problem, though, is that Kintzler's peripherals suggested seriously underlying suck. The velocity held steady and nothing changed with his pitch mix; however, his strikeout rate tumbled and tumbled and tumbled some more, until only six pitchers in baseball were looking up at him. The right-hander continued to rack up the groundballs, but without doing any of the home run-suppressing benefits of such an approach: His 17 percent HR/FB ranked fifth in baseball. That't just ain't workable in high-leverage spots, bruh.
2014 Kintzler is all of the following: former 40th-round pick, elbow surgery survivor, former independent league player and, most importantly, successful relief pitcher. After a bullpen disaster in 2012, the Brewers decided to see if his mid-90s sinker (along with changeup and slider) could play, and lo, it did. The sinker kept the ball in the yard and racked up the strikes while his changeup was one of the best pitches in the majorsit induced 26 percent whiffs (nearly matching Koji Uehara's splitter) and a mere .278 slugging percentage on contact. He took a circuitous route, but the 29-year-old might have shown enough to earn a high-leverage role in 2014.
2013 Kintzler returned from a year lost to elbow surgery and something called Valgus Extension Overload (or what a layman might call a sore elbow caused by the unnatural stress of throwing a baseball really, really hard) to prove he was healthy and earn a September call-up. While his ability to throw a low-90s fastball and a usable slider differentiates him considerably from the masses, its not particularly remarkable for a middle reliever. Given the state of Milwaukees bullpen he may well earn a roster spot this spring, and the laws of probability say hes as likely as anyone to randomly post 50 solid inningsor pitch his way back to Nashville.
2012 Nothing against Kintzler, but it's a telling commentary on organizational strength when a 27-year-old relief pitcher who was pitching in the Northern (Independent) League in 2008 makes the Arizona Fall League roster. He can throw 95 mph at times, appeared to be recovered from July forearm surgery in AFL action, and certainly won't be the worst pitcher in the bigs if he makes the team.
2011 Indie-league find Brandon Kintzler induces lots of awkward swings with his fastball/slider combination, and has a shot to go north with the big club.

2017-05-15 17:00:00 (link to chat)Do Flags truly Fly Forever? In the middle of the 2011 season, I traded a 2012 1st round pick and Mike Trout for Robinson Cano. I won my first ever league championship in 2011, and another in 2013. Yet years later, I still feel guilty for having traded away the best player since Barry Bonds. Am I silly to talk about this with my therapist, or should I just suck it up and be happy with what I got out of the deal?
(Paul from DC)
It sounds to me like you did OK. I'd only feel bad about that deal if I hadn't won the league. And you won multiple times! Therapy is for when you make a deal like that and lose the league by half a point because Brandon Kintzler got a save on the last day of the regular season. (Mike Gianella)
2017-05-15 17:00:00 (link to chat)I missed out on the recent slew of new closers in our league. Who is your prediction for the next set up man to become closer?
(Hawzy from FB&T)
Brandon Kintzler has been fine but he strikes out almost no one and has little margin for error. Tyler Duffey is my fun, don't-call-me-out-on-this-five-months-from-now pick. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)So, who do you have finishing the season with the most saves for the Cubs, Cards and Brewers? thanks
(Kevin from Boston)
For the Cubs, I would have to guess Kyuji Fujikawa. Carlos Marmol might get the job again, but he would probably be put in there to showcase him for a trade. Trevor Rosenthal isn't the closer now in St. Louis, but Mitchell Boggs has already struggled so if I'm going to guess, I'm going to guess the guy with the skills and the stuff. Milwaukee is a mystery to me. I thought John Axford would lose the job but had no idea it would happen so quickly. I would guess Jim Henderson, but he has some of the same control/command issues that Ax does/did. My sleeper in this pen is Brandon Kintzler, but I don't see Kintzler as having a path to the job at the moment. (Mike Gianella)
