It's a weird place for them to be so shallow, especially after they took like eight qualified big-league starters into the 2013 season and still ended up needing Edinson Volquez and Ricky Nolasco. (Dan from Bloomington)	I think Markakis might actually look better in Atlanta, provided some of their insane defensive numbers stem from an overzealous stringer. Nelson Cruz is the most obvious pick. Edinson Volquez, too-I'm not convinced he made zero gains last season, but I'm reluctant to bet on him maintaining those numbers. I'd probably say Brandon Moss, too, based on the health concerns. (allangustafson from San Diego )	Mark Buehrle has to be one, right? I mean, his witch magic is going to run out at some point. I do think Edinson Volquez's "effective" 2014 was a mirage. his K% and BB% don't inspire confidence, and I think he comes back to Earth quite a bit this year. As for the AL ... the former Oriole Alfredo Simon who was acquired by Detroit is a huge regression candidate. His K% never matched the stuff, and his ugly peripherals will start to catch up with him against better offenses. (Jeff Long)

Coming into the season, the Padres had four or five legitimate big-league pitchers. Two of them (Edinson Volquez and Huston Street) have been terrible. Even after Sunday night's strong showing from Clayton Richard, their starters own the NL's highest ERA by a lot. It will be good to see Chase Headley back in the lineup this week, but his presence won't help a bad pitching staff. Unless the Padres find some guys who can get big-league hitters out, it's going to be a long season. (Geoff Young)

(matthewverygood from Los Angeles)	Hey Matt, as you know, Volquez is one of the most frustrating pitchers in baseball to watch. He can dominate for short periods, but the inevitable lapses of concentration and/or command kill his game. He has a great arm. Maybe a move to the bullpen would help. Of course, the Padres have precious few options for the rotation, so it won't happen. I'm not sure he'll fetch much in trade either. (Geoff Young)

We have a great offense, but we've been ravaged by injuries on the pitching side. We could make up a lot of ground if we added some strikeouts. Should we try to deal a bat for a high K guy or wait for our injured pitchers - namely Halladay and Morrow - to get well? Thanks! (Liam from Williston, VT)	It's hard to say without knowing all of your league dynamics, but it seems like you have some offense to spare. Since Halladay and Morrow could potentially be out another month, and since guys don't usually just come out of nowhere to start striking people out, it sounds like you'd be well-advised to go get some Ks. Assuming your ratios are in order, guys in the Edinson Volquez mold might be appealing. (Derek Carty)

I think it'll be one of the guys who came over in the Mat Latos trade. Edinson Volquez hasn't made it through an entire season healthy since 2008 but he still misses bats and he's coming to a park where last year's gopheritis won't be as much of an issue. Even if Volquez doesn't return to his peak, he could be a pleasant surprise. (Geoff Young)

(John from Indy)	Yes I do. As an NL-only pick, Volquez is a good guy to get. The park shift will be big, and as you said, he's shown flashes of being a good pitcher in the past. That's 9 guys for 5 rotation spots in Cincinnati. How can Jocketty best capitalize on that depth? (RMR from Chicago)	A few of the brighter bulbs 'round these parts (where there isn't much call for cheddar, by the way)have made a few suggestions. IIRC, SG recommended they trade Volquez, while CK opted for shipping out Maloney, I think. Me, I'd find out what sort of a market there is for Mike Leake -- maybe he's already at his peak trade value. It's really, really hard to predict trades that actually get made, because you almost always look like you're way over- or under-valuing someone in retrospect. That being said, sitting on all that pitching is like sitting on a pot of gold, and Jocketty is sure to be a very popular man next week. (Ken Funck)

But is suspension really even the biggest factor in the punishment? Neither will likely pitch next year, both have some risk of development, both have some upside. I guess the question boils down to how much you believe that Edinson can regain his status from the injury. I am in a strat league, I could either keep Volquez or cut him and draft someone in the 80th range on Goldstein's next list. (LindInMoskva from DC)	Volquez will miss 2010, but most pitchers come back from TJ to previous level. That's a major league pitcher with some upside. He'll be 28. Looking back to Goldstein's 2008 list (not 2009), guys at that level are Deolis Guerra, Radhames Liz, Max Scherzer, Jair Jurrjens, Aaron Poreda, and Greg Reynolds. Even with a year of development, we're looking at two guys who have established themselves at the MLB level, plus Poreda who's an upside guy. I'd probably take Poreda and Jurrjens over Volquez right now, Scherzer's a toss up, but then you have to figure out the "bust risk." Which of those guys would I have picked LAST year and am I confident that I can pick correctly? Kevin's an expert and had Poreda under Liz ... I think that bust risk is huge, so I'd almost always go with the guy I know can pitch. (Will Carroll)

I had the Reds as my sleeper team last year and while they didn't get there, most of the guys you mentioned are fascinating, with a ton of upside. The series I watched most closely all year long was when the Reds came to Yankee Stadium in late June. I don't see the Reds with a shot at the 2009 NL Central but I think third place is a possibility with the right moves this winter. (smitty25039 from Charleston)	If you haven't already, check out Kevin Goldstein's article on which teams might be the "next Rays" in the NL. http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8203 The Reds are close, but as Goldstein says, the outlook is "semi-bright, but not perfect." One big problem is the outfield corners; they've got nobody now without Dunn, and it doesn't look like minor league center fielder Drew Stubbs is quite ready to make enough impact with the bat to move Jay Bruce to a corner. According to Goldstein, Cincinnati is also pretty weak in pitching prospects beyond the group that already hit the majors this season, and the 2008 results from Homer Bailey were discouraging. Still, Cueto and Volquez are a fantastic young duo, and I'm pretty high on Ramon Ramirez, too, who pitched well in September and has a nasty changeup. Not in 2009, but by 2010 they could be fighting for a division title if that starting trio continues to develop. (Caleb Peiffer)
