2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)If the Brewers do make the move to bring up Jimmy Nelson and move Marco Estrada to the bullpen, they are going to need to clear room in the pen. Who are potential trade partners who could take one of their many pen lefties and what could we expect in return for say Tom Gorzelanny?
(BeerTheDeer from Milwaukee)
I'm not sure it's a foregone conclusion that Nelson replaces Estrada in the Brewers' bullpen, but Milwaukee is in a good spot w/ their plethora of lefties. Gorz, Will Smith, and Zach Duke can all handle righties and lefties -- with varying levels of dominance -- so they're not weighing their bullpen down w/ LOOGYs. If the Brewers do end up moving someone like Gorz, though, it would be for a lower-tier prospect or perhaps a utility guy. Nothing exciting. (J.P. Breen)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Tom Gorzelanny? Seems to me the Nats gave up 3 guys that may never get more than a cup of coffee in exchange for the second best starter on their team for now. It's not saying much given that rotation, and JZimm will pass him at some point, but still, not a bad deal, right?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
I don't know much about the minor leaguers involved honestly, so I'm still sort of debating that portion of things. But I like Gorzelanny well enough. He walks too many hitters, but he also has 8.1 K/9 and a 2.0 K/BB over the last two seasons (183 1/3 innings). (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think wins the #5 spot in the Cubs rotation?
(Jack from Chicago)
Tom Gorzelanny. I think Jeff Samardzija is better suited to being a reliever. (John Perrotto)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Tom Gorzelanny has a chance to succeed with the Cubs?
(Kevin from Chicago)
Yes. All sorts of people can use a change of scenery, and if all they want is for him to succeed in relief, he can do that. The question is, could he return to his former promise as a starter, and there, it'll be interesting to see. Things turned out much better with Ryan Dempster than almost anybody expected, after all. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you give me the scoop on the Pirates' new pitching coach? I don't know too much about him. I've been cautiously pleased with Neal's decision-making thus far (although he did hire Andrews). Please tell me this is a good hire. Go Buccos!
(Matt Lawrence from Land of the Free)
Matt, you're killing me. I usually make it a point of not answering questions that get sent in a million times. It's kind of naggy. I know your question is here. I tend to pick questions based on how stimulating I find them, if I feel like I have something interesting to say in response, and try to avoid answering very similar questions back to back. Often, even if I don't get to a question right away (they come flooding in over the transom every 30 seconds), I will pick it up later in the chat. Be patient!

The Pirates have hired Joe Kerrigan as their pitching coach. He's a veteran guy who was well-regarded for his work with the Red Sox in the late 1990s. He's a known quantity with a baseline competence that should work well for the Pirates, but if he has the insight to take Tom Gorzelanny and turn him back into a major league pitcher, that I don't know. It's a lot easier when your prize pupil is Pedro Martinez. (Steven Goldman)

Sonnanstine's intriguing. Lilly's using the wrong pitches, from what I can tell. I like Gorzelanny, but I'd like him more if he'd stop hurting my own team's numbers. I'd take Sonnanstine for now, honestly. Phil Hughes is all kinds of messed up at the moment.

Sonnanstine's using a cutter more this year, probably to offset the number of fastballs in the zone hitters knew were coming in '07. It hasn't helped his strikeout rate, but he's lowered the number of base hits he's allowing. That's a tough crowd of FA, I'll give you that... (Marc Normandin)
