2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Appreciate your work Ben. What do you make of the OF situation in Texas? Julio Borbon surely isn't an everyday player in this league. Are they crazy for not getting David Murphy 500+ at bats?
(batch1nyy from Ft. Worth)
I wouldn't get too excited about David Murphy in an outfield corner, and I'm not sure how realistic an option Murphy in center would be. He's probably a better fit as a fourth outfielder. Of course, Borbon is probably a better fit as a Triple-A outfielder, so you have a point. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)David Murphy, in his age 28 season, has quietly hit a solid .292/.358/.450. Do you see him matching, or even bettering, those numbers in the coming years?
(Cambridge from Cambridge)
I wouldn't have much confidence in his ability to better that by a large margin, but matching? Sure, for at least a couple years. As a corner outfielder, he can't afford to lose much off of that line, though. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love the fact that the Rangers are winning, but is Ron Washington not the worst game manager in baseball? I mean David Murphy in the 3 hole, Bengie Molina batting betweeen Hamilton and Nellie Cruz. I know that he's a "player's" manager and all, but you could see the disgust in Hambone's face when Wash bunted Molina to get to Cruz after a leadoff double...ok done ranting...thoughts?
(ramjam36 from Fort Worth, Tx)
I haven't seen enough of his day-to-day nature to know if he's a problem in that sense, but I've heard some odd things about sac bunts and lineup placement this year. (Marc Normandin)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Your opinion of the following proposed trade: Astros Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler.
(CTM from Houston, TX)
This would be ghastly, especially for the Rangers. Pence may not really stick as much more than a filler in a corner in the better league, and the Rangers already have that on their bench in the form of David Murphy. Putting him in center seems a stretch, so he doesn't fix that problem. And then how do you replace Kinsler, bump Michael Young to the keystone and put Chris Davis at third? Arias and Blanco aren't viable everyday players. And all of this to get Oswalt, an older, shorter right-hander with health issues, coming to the DH league? As Eric Seidman argued this morning, I think any deal for Oswalt's only going to yield pennies on the dollar, given his contract. He's worth more to the Astros as an Astro than as something to dangle and then wangle with. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Andruw Jones recently had his 32nd birthday. 1) What your odds that he has returned to nearly peak form? 2) Will there be room in the line-up for him when Hamilton returns?
(hotstatrat from at home on my computer)
1) Not great. I like him as a fourth/platoon outfielder who can play center better than anyone else on the roster, though. 2) As long as David Murphy is in the mix, there should be room for Jones, because Jones is no worse a player, and maybe better. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)Andruw Jones has had an encouraging spring thus far. Does he make the Rangers opening day roster and if so what can we expect out of him this year as far as playing time and numbers go?
(tompshock from San Diego)
I'd like to see him batting eighth or ninth and playing center field a lot of the time. The Rangers have simply refused to put good defensive players in the outfield for quite some time. It'd be nice to see if a real CF made the pitching better. Given that I don't think much of David Murphy, I have no problem with a Cruz/Jones/Hamilton outfield, with Murphy as the fourth and Byrd as the fifth. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)What would you do with 2b if you were Omar? Castillo is a sunk cost.
(Robert from NYC)
I've been asked by the readers to scout David Murphy. I think you have to see how that transition goes before making Castillo go away. Problem with Castillo is that he can't even fake shortstop, so if he's not your everyday 2B, he's a waste of a roster spot. (Joe Sheehan)
