2007 Martin Van Buren was elected eighth president of the United States in 1836 and immediately had to deal with a collapsing economy. Exactly 170 years later, Jermaine Van Buren was elected to the Boston Red Sox and immediately became part of a collapsing bullpen. Desperate for roster space leading up to the Rule 5 Draft, the Cubs traded Van Buren, their 2005 Minor League Baseball Relief Pitcher of the Year, to the Red Sox. Shuttling between Pawtucket and Boston six times as Warm Body No. 11, he didn`t do nearly as much damage as his line would indicate; his WXRL was seventh out of 18 Sox relievers, and his minor league numbers (2.22 ERA and 2.7 K/BB over the past three seasons) and repertoire (a power slider and a low-90s fastball) suggest he deserves another shot. Appropriately, he`ll get it in Washington, where he happened to land in November.
2006 Van Buren`s success is a credit to the Cubs` willingness to comb the indy leagues, like Joe Borowski was before him. His velocity dropped this year, forcing Van Buren to rely more heavily on a power slider to finish people, but he`s still dialing it up around 90 and might get his missing MPH back and become a relief stalwart. Dealt to Boston as part of the Cubs` drive to avoid losing talent in the Rule 5 draft. The last famous Van Buren was Martin, the president, nicknamed `O.K.` (short for `Old Kinderhook`). Our generation has do better than that for this Van Buren, although a pitcher officially nicknamed `O.K.` would probably get seven large in arbitration.
