DateQuestionAnswer
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good afternoon Jay! Of those currently HOF-eligible, which player had the longest career with nowhere near the stats to merit consideration for the Hall? (aka an overly long mediocre career)
(dianagramr from NYC)
On the most recent ballot, David Segui's JAWS came in about 40 points below the HOF standard at first base, a pretty wide gap. Shawon Dunston was about 56 shy, but that was before WARP's replacement level got raised; a quick check tells me he's still even further off than Segui. Among the pitchers, the worst I recall coming across was Bobby Witt, who today would be about 43 points below the average HOF starting pitcher. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)Machado hit .639. What is the highest high school batting average you can remember? What is a good comp for Machado?
(O's Fan from Baltimore)
Shawon Dunston hit .790 his senior year. That's gotta be up there. White Sox take Sale, what a GREAT pick for them. 14 could be Workman, still outside shot at Ranaudo. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a keeper Strat-O-Matic league, would you take Elvis Andrus or Gordon Beckham? Assume the team's other left-side infielder is someone like Brendan Harris, who can start at SS or 3B as needed.
(Rex Little from Big Bear, CA)
The difference in their ages and position--the White Sox appear to be committed to the Cuban Shawon Dunston at shortstop--mean I'd take Andrus. Keeper leagues are about long-term value. I like Beckham a lot, but a long-term 1 at short with a decent bat is what you build around. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is this the real Alexei Ramirez?
(AMan from IN)
Probably. He has tools and absolutely no idea what he's doing with them. He reminds me of Shawon Dunston, or the infield version of Jeff Francaeiour. There's almost no way to be a star walking twice a month. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Carlos Gomez in the future is what kind of player?
(Mike from Minnesota)
80% of Devon White. Shawon Dunston in center field. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-01-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)my prediction: Goose in. Rice misses by an extremely small margin. Much, much bleating commences over the voters who submitted blanks to protest roids users, thus depriving the "deserving" pre-roids slugger.
(TomH from Lexington Park MD)
The Goose is Loose! He gets 85.8 percent, and he's the only one who gets in on this ballot.

Rice falls just shy at 72.2 percent, setting him up for a 15th-year push.

Raines 24.3 percent. Oh is that ugly.
