2011 Cory Sullivan is a Quad-A player who is stretched as a major-league regular but could spend another season or two in the bigs as a fifth outfielder if he happens to land in the right place at the right time.
2010 Signed to a $600,000 deal prior to the season, Sullivan was expected to be a bench outfielder who could hit from the left side and provide great defense, but due to a miserable spring he began the year in Buffalo instead of the big leagues. He assumed the expected big-league duties in mid-July when Gary Sheffield went on the DL, but didn't really do much offensively, not that anyone expected him to do much in the first place—this is a guy who hit one home run in 441 at-bats in Coors Field. The Mets declined to offer him arbitration this winter, but his glove alone will get him a spring look from somebody.
2009 After spending two years as an occasional big-leaguer, Cory Sullivan has spent more time at Colorado Springs over the last two seasons, which doesn't bode well—if you can't out-hit Willy Taveras...
2008 Does Sullivan make four or five center fielders on the Rockies better than anything the Marlins ran out there in 2007? It's easy to lose count. Sullivan is another extra outfielder, more speedy than savvy, and he lost most of his playing time to Taveras. Arbitration-eligible this winter, the Rockies could save a million bucks or so by non-tendering Sullivan and using Sean Barker or Seth Smith in his place.
2007 Sullivan began the season as the starting center fielder. After a hot April (.327/.377/.541), he collapsed in May and lost playing time the rest of the way--though he played enough to record 19 sacrifice bunts. Always stretched as an offensive regular, Sullivan has trouble with inside pitches, leading to a strikeout every four plate appearances. Although a better defender than Spilborghs and Salazar, he`s likely to be the odd man out this season.
2006 Sullivan missed the 2004 season with a torn labrum, but earned a spot on the major league roster with a strong spring training, meaning he`s skipped both High-A and Triple-A in his career. When Preston Wilson was traded, Sullivan took over in center; his defense was acceptable but his offense was not. Of course, he`s never hit for power and hitting even this well in the majors after an entire year off is impressive, until you remember his home park. A platoon of Sullivan and Jeff Salazar would make some sense if only both of them weren`t left-handed.
2004 Sullivan has an outside shot at a big league job in 2004, primarily because of his defensive reputation and strong arm in center. As a hitter, he'll have his moments, but he didn't do much against lefties, and he doesn't get on base enough to make a great regular. But he does do the things that can catch an eye in camp: a couple of good defensive plays, a hard-hit liner or two, and he could stick. He's not especially young, so he'll need to make that sort of impression.
