BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Jason Repko has spent a good portion of his major league career battling injuries; the 2011 season saw him make trips to the DL for quad and shoulder woes. A decent defender, he lacks the power or patience to merit even a fifth outfielder job at this point.
2011 Repko might win (or at least merit) a Gold Glove if he had the chance to play every day, as his outstanding speed allows him to chase down fly balls from gap to gap and turn in Web Gem-type plays. However, even the greatest of defensive players needs to have at least some success at the plate to earn regular appearances, and Repko gets overpowered by fastballs and hard sliders. On a team with the roster space, he'd be a handy guy to have around to serve as a pinch-runner and late-inning caddy for a poor defensive outfielder, but teams that meet that description are hard to come by in the era of the overcrowded bullpen.
2010 Jason Repko continues to occupy a spot on the 40-man roster despite just 27 major-league PAs since 2006; his continued presence has cost the team more than one Rule 5 pick.
2009 A severe hamstring injury cost Jason Repko all of 2007 and downgraded his status from handy fifth outfielder—at least in this organization, with its excess of well-paid, unproductive outfielders.
2008 After missing much of 2006 with a high ankle sprain, Jason Repko tore his hamstring so severely during spring training that it cost him the entire 2007 season, then was shut down during a fall instructional league stint after re-injuring the ankle.
2007 Exposed as replacement-level fodder by the team`s injury situation in 2005, Repko was again pressed into service when Kenny Lofton began the year on the DL. Having apparently sold his soul in exchange for one hot month, Repko hit a ridiculous .328/.414/.574 with 6 steals in April. The devil got his due when Repko suffered a high ankle sprain on May 9 after digging his left foot into fence padding in an attempt to snag a home run. He didn`t return until late July, and, shorn of his lone asset, speed, hit a useless .197/.290/.213 the rest of the way. If he`s healed, his defensive ability and the off chance that he`s actually learned to hit make him an acceptable choice as a fifth outfielder, but that`s a low ceiling to work with.
2006 Repko illustrates the perils of letting a player win a job based on a spring training performance that flies in the face of all other evidence. Previously a rock-solid non-prospect, it only took a torrid March to beguile Tracy. The predictable end result was that the Dodgers had little to show for Repko`s 301 PAs other than a lot of hard-nosed play that did nothing to overcome his offensive limitations. As a defensive caddy and pinch-runner, Repko would have his uses on a postseason roster. Short of that, there`s little justification for keeping him around.
2004 At one time touted as a future star, Repko has fallen into the Guy Who Runs Really Fast But Does Little Else category. He works hard, so the Dodgers feel that he's a good player to have around the kids. The unfortunate thing is, it looks like he's destined to be surrounded by the kids for the rest of his career.

2010-10-06 10:00:002010 Playoffs Day OneThat's the fun thing with a lot of the postseason rosters. Jason Repko? Dan Johnson? Frenchy? Rocco? Matt Treanor on the bench, when the Rangers were supposed to be the young catching-enabled ballclub? It's a funny old world. The Yankees have Dustin Moseley and Sergio Mitre suited up, for chrissakes. (Christina Kahrl)
