2013-10-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Saw this mentioned elsewhere, but should teams take a velo-hitting specialst like Donnie Murphy more serious? Seems like he would help the Sox in this series.
(Bad Ziegler from Bad Land)
Do teams not take him seriously? I don't know. I know velocity shortens the time the batter has to react to the pitch, so he must make decisions more quickly, which increases the likelihood that he isn't able to react in time. But pure velocity gets hit all the time in MLB. Kyle Farnsworth is a prime example. He could throw 100 but was never more than a mid-bullpen guy because he didn't have the command an his fastball was too straight. Pure velocity is nice, but that's not necessarily why the Red Sox had trouble with Verlander and Scherzer. They had problems with those guys because they have great command, lots of plus pitches, AND because they throw the heck out of the ball. (Matthew Kory)
2013-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is it too late for the Red Sox to sign a velocity masher like Donnie Murphy?
(L'Chaim Bloom from HoustonHangout)
This seems like a good place to call it a day. (R.J. Anderson)
2008-10-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)After multiple major surgeries, what kind of production should we expect from Eric Chavez next season and beyond?
(Dave from Chicago)
I've always viewed the litanies of injuries of both Chavez and Bobby Crosby as enough for the A's to move strongly towards Plan B options at both positions; that they haven't remains one of Billy Beane's biggest shortcomings. I expect nothing from them, and I think the A's might eventually come around to the idea that Jack Hanahan and Donnie Murphy aren't gonna cut it. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for your great work. What type of numbers do you see Stephen Drew putting up this year? Does .270/.360/.450 sound reasonable or a pipe dream? And what are your thoughts on Donnie Murphy, assuming he gets at-bats with the A's?
(Dennis from LA)
I'm not much of a Murphy fan. I think he's a decent bench player at best, and if he's playing every day for you, that means something, somewhere has gone horribly wrong. I'm very, very optimistic still about Stephen Drew's future, and I don't think that line is a pipe dream in the least. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you like to see replace Scutaro: Jack Hannahan, Donnie Murphy, or Kevin Melillo?
(Drew W from Vienna VA)
If Melillo could handle short, that would be lovely considering he does a bit of damage against righties, but as a practical matter, I think it's Donnie Hill^H^H^H^H^H Murphy. (Christina Kahrl)
