2004		Normally, .281/.360/.530 looks pretty good. In Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, it's pretty mediocre, especially when coming from a 25-year-old who plays below-average defense. Chen isn't much of a prospect anymore, but could probably help the Dodgers as a bat off the bench.
2003		Uh-oh. Chen failed to take a step forward in Triple-A, finishing a dismal seventh in EqA among Las Vegas hitters with more than 300 plate appearances. Making matters worse, the Dodgers have all given up on Chen in the outfield, his one game in left with the big club last year notwithstanding. Though he’s still got a little time to turn it around, Chen’s gone from a potential star to a poor-fielding plodder who doesn’t hit enough to justify his spot at the far end of the defensive spectrum. That’s a harsh statement on a Dodgers farm system struggling to churn out big league hitters.
2002		No one who's seen Chen play likes his defense, but everyone likes his stroke. When it's working, his stroke is unbelievably quick, somewhat reminiscent of Mark McGwire's. The bat doesn't travel very far, and it comes down through the bottom-center of the ball, creating vicious line drives with a ton of backspin that makes the ball just take off. His defensive statistics aren't really that bad, yet we can't find one person to say anything good about his glove work, and the Dodgers already have him DHing a little in the minors. They should give him a shot to take Eric Karros's job, but they won't, given the contract Karros signed.
2001		The DT looks bad, but keep in mind that Chin-Feng Chen was in just his second year as a professional and his second year in the United States. The disappearance of his power was an extreme example of a player adjusting to older competition. This is a critical season for Chen; look for him to bounce back, hit well at both San Antonio and Las Vegas, and reach Chavez Ravine in September.
2000		Chen had a fantastic year in what is, admittedly, an excellent environment for a hitter. While his ability to hit was known, he really surprised people with his speed. Chen is one of the best offensive prospects in baseball and could be in a Dodger uniform as early as this September.
