2007 Stapled inside the cover of the office copy of Dodger General Management for Dummies is a coffee-stained business card with Carrara`s phone number. After toiling in obscurity for more than a decade, the Venezuelan journeyman turned up on Kevin Malone`s watch, and he`s now pitched intermittently during the Dan Evans, Paul DePodesta, and Ned Colletti regimes, enjoying a success in Dodger Blue he`s never found anywhere else. Maybe it`s the Dodger Dogs. Carrara might not make the team out of spring training, but as his K/BB ratio suggests, he can still contribute in the middle of the bullpen.
2006 A useful, durable reliever who came back to earth after an outstanding 2004. Though he set a career high in appearances, Carrara showed major declines in his rate stats, and fared poorly handling inherited runners, more than doubling his Fair Run Average from 2.26 to 4.64. He refused a minor league assignment to get him off of the 40-man roster, became a free agent, and will likely find work elsewhere.
2005 He's found a home for that Vicente Padilla pitch that he throws better than Vicente Padilla. Keeps the ball down, can make batters miss, good durability. He will allow more homers than he did in '04; some regression is almost inevitable.
2004 Always among the very warmest of bodies, Carrara, who was once a Ken Phelps All Star, finally got his shot in, MLB at an advanced age, and has managed a brief career. And there's nothing quite like getting lit up to make sure one's career stays brief. Carrara can still probably pitch under the right circumstances, and the Indians will give him a shot.
2003 Carrara regressed from his solid 2001 season as his control wavered at times, a troubling sign for a pitcher who already allows plenty of balls in play. Heís still a useful, durable pitcher for a team with a complex about its pitching depth. That said, the line for a soft-tossing, right-handed deception artist gets thinner with each passing year.
2002 Carrara has more frequent-flier miles than Pamela Des Barres. He also has great control, reasonable stuff, and a very good ability to change speeds. Despite his less-than-four-star itinerary, Carrara can pitch, and he could definitely help a championship club in a Ramiro Mendoza role.
2001 Giovanni Carrara is a hefty Venezuelan soft-tosser who can throw strikes. He spent 1998 in Japan pitching for Seibu. Sort of like Larry Luebbers, heís the kind of journeyman to have around if youíre a major-league team with five relatively durable big-league starters. Carrara can be your sixth starter in case somebody has to miss a month.
1998 Carrara has now pitched well at Triple-A for two years, and gotten cups of coffee in each of the last three. Heís here because heís exactly the kind of low-risk, high-reward pitcher you want to see getting an invite to your teamís training camp. If he gets a clean shot, I think heís got one or two good years in him. At the least, will be insurance through the end of the millennium. Call me if Harry Carayís doing one of his games.
1996  When you have a bad team with few talented starters, you have two options:

1) Try to acquire older guys like Danny Darwin to do something
2) Pitch a bunch of young pitchers

The Jays did sign Danny Darwin, but when he didn't work out, their pitching cupboard was about as bare as Elizabeth Berkeley in "Showgirls". So they ran a bunch of nondescript guys out there, who they were pretty sure couldn't pitch, out of sheer desperation. I'd be surprised in any of these guys worked out, but they simply had no options. I will refer to these guys as the "Desperation Group" or DG for short. This is what bad teams have to do to get innings. Don't believe me? Check out the Tigers for the last, oh, five or six years?
