DateQuestionAnswer
2014-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Jesse Crain at $5 a worthwhile freeze investment for a 12 team 5X5 roto team looking to speculate on saves and without much spending at the auction?
(cubswin08 from Chicago)
Depends on your budget and all, obviously. But, within a vacuum, a little fantasy birdie named Craig Goldstein told me there should be better, surer options available. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think gets the most saves for Houston this year, and is that player worth drafting?
(uvasuperman from Atlanta)
I still like Jesse Crain assuming health, although that's an open question right now. I have no faith in Chad Qualls even if he does start the year with the job. But to your point, Crain is a trade candidate even if he does get on track so all of these guys are late round fliers and maybe even reserve picks in 12-team mixers. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Rays are on a roll like cottonelle, but recently Joe Maddon has had some questionable bullpen usage. Was the Jesse Crain trade a panic move? And has Merlot Joe logged off his computer in favor of his gut?
(Drizzy from T.Dot)
I don't consider it a panic move. Crain was arguably the top reliever moved, even with the injury situation. Besides, Tampa Bay has a deep bullpen as it is with few specialists. Hard for any manager, including one as skilled as Maddon, to mess up too bad with the available options. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2012-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Thornton comes up with the yips again this spring, does CHW go straight to Addison Reed or will Jesse Crain get a shot?
(PepeShady from StPaul)
I thought it was reasonably well established that what Thornton went through last year wasn't "the yips" but an unsuccessful attempt to establish his changeup.

If I'm a team in rebuilding mode, as the Sox should be (but can't truly be given the $82 million owed to Alex Rios and Adam Dunn), I'd probably churn closers if possible, as the Sox did by flipping Sergio Santos. Get the increasingly expensive Thornton to about 20 saves and flip him, then turn to Crain and do the same. By then, Reed will have more than gotten his feet wet in the majors and will be well-prepared to do the job. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)MIN has had good luck in getting mileage out of retread relief pitchers. Any guesses who they turn to this year? I think they still need one more and the organization isn't bursting with anyone that didn't underwhelm last year.
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
Mahay could go there and produce well as a LOOGY. I'd still like to see them give Condrey another shot if he can stay healthy. Maybe Grant Balfour too. But this brings up a very good point. The Twins got guys like Jesse Crain and Matt Guerrier from the scrapheap, and these guys each just signed lucrative three-year deals. Finding ways to get good bullpen production without spending any money is, to me, the next big market inefficiency. (Eric Seidman)
