YearComment
2006 There`s nothing wrong with adequacy, but Spivey is burdened with the expectation that he has another 2001 in him, when he hit .301/.389/.476. He doesn`t, of course; he needed the BOB`s friendly confines to do it, and he`s never been much of an offensive threat to right-handed pitching. He is exactly what the Brewers acquired him to be--a placeholder until a prospect like Rickie Weeks is ready. He will give the Cardinals that, although sadly without anyone like Weeks in the wings.
2005 Yes, another player from the Sexson haul. Spivey's 2002 season with Arizona has earned him several years of job stability, though his recent performances don't merit the financial windfall he's going to get as an arbitration eligible player. His skill set makes him a nice fit as a useful role player, but he's miscast as an everyday second baseman. The trade of Keith Ginter nearly guarantees that he'll be keeping second base warm until Rickie Weeks is ready, however.
2004 After an injury-marred 2003, Spivey is about to become an even greater disappointment. The problem is that he hasn't hit well outside of the BOB, and he really only thumps lefties. The park hid his limitations, to the point that Garagiola seemed certain of his continued success after an appropriately timed "Age 27" career year in 2002. Wisely, Spivey was dealt while he still had value. As a Brewer, Spivey will fit right in: He's superficially valuable-looking, actually fairly limited, and already expensive for what he provides.
2003 How cool was that? Spivey rode the confluence of increased playing time, good health, and a shortened swing to become one of the most valuable players in the National League. If they can find a way to keep him in the lineup full-time, he can continue to be an outstanding contributor. If he can slide the angle he takes on ground balls to his right, he could even jack up his defensive value.
2002 Spivey’s debut wasn’t outstanding, but it got him out of the mess he’d made for himself by failing to hit in his first extended Triple-A time. If we consider economics, Spivey should be the clear choice for the second-base job in 2001. If we consider the Arizona organization as a whole and its need to shift to younger hitters, Spivey should be the clear choice for the second-base job in 2001. We expect Jay Bell to play second base for Arizona this year.
1999 Another good Diamondback second base prospect. Spivey gets more attention for his speed than his walks, which is OK; at least he's getting noticed. Rexrode has a higher upside and is much younger, so I doubt Spivey has a future in this organization. Had a terrible AFL season.
