BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 J.D. Martin, an intelligent, poised soft-tosser, harnessed his cutter and had a glorious 2013, posting the International League's lowest walk rate and winning its Most Valuable Pitcher award, which he parlayed into millions—of Korean won, from the Samsung Lions.
2012 J.D. Martin still throws just about everything as he tries to hang on as a utility pitcher; if he surfaces as your team's fifth starter, it's not a good sign.
2011 Martin is increasingly becoming one of those guys who, if he didn't have bad luck, wouldn't have any luck at all. After the veteran junkballer was finally given a chance to join the rotation in May once Scott Olsen broke down, Martin made it through two months before a back injury shelved him for the rest of the year. He'll contend with Maya and Atilano for the last slot in the rotation, but his victory would be a confession that the other two aren't ready, not an endorsement of his ability to keep the job over the long term.
2010 A former Indians supplemental first-rounder from 2001, Martin had been reduced to journeyman status, and was signed to provide pitching depth in the minors. Then he tore through the International League, and given their dire need, the Nats couldn't ignore the performance. His approach relies more heavily on changeups than his fastball, which doesn't generally translate into big-league success, but Martin held his own, and is certainly worthy of another extended look. He probably won't get to enjoy a lengthy career in the bigs, but the dominance he displayed in the minors did not happen by chance, every rotation needs its back-end starters, so why not a strike-throwing survivor who put in nine years to make it?
2009 A TJ survivor who is already an eight-year minor league vet, J.D. Martin should eventually make it up to the majors as a reliever.
2008 Right-hander J.D. Martin constantly teases the organization with his talents, only to frustrate them with his elbow problems. Dropped from the roster and brought back on a minor league deal, he may be on his last chance with Cleveland.
2007 Just when he seemed to be emerging as a prospect, J.D. Martin succumbed to Tommy John surgery. He looked good in his late-season return, so keep an eye on this one--he was on the verge of a big league look as a starter.
2005 A supplemental first-round pick in 2001 (for the loss of Manny Ramirez), Martin looked like money in the bank after his first two seasons. A strained elbow ligament put a damper on the fun: Though he avoided the surgeon's knife, it sure looked like there was some hangover in 2004 as his strikeout rate failed to recover. Martin doesn't throw hard, so everything has to be in sync for him pitch effectively. It could happen, sure. "An optimist is a guy who has never had much experience."

2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the trio of Nats' AAA Syracuse starters who have been killing the last month - Colin Balester, J.D. Martin and Garrett Mock? Any of them have a real future in the majors?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Balester's on a consecutive quality start streak of six, Mock's at three, and Martin's managed it in nine of 13 turns. That said, Mock and Martin both aren't all that durable and are more organizational types; I'd like to see Balester taken more seriously, but with guys like Stammen and Martis in the mix, the Nats make some strange choices in terms of who they favor.
