2015-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's up RJ. How high are you on guys like ( and specifically) Anthony Alford? Is there any track record of extremely athletic, baseball limited guys becoming truly successful? Or do most of them just because lost heart throbs? Thanks
(ssauve25 from SF)
1) I don't have any opinion on Alford.
2) Yeah, absolutely. I don't know how their stories compare to Alford, but Carl Crawford, Todd Helton, Gabe Gross, Tony Gwynn, etc. were all multi-sport guys. Teams like multi-sport guys because it's a sign of greater athleticism and/or competitiveness. Heck, I just read last week about how the Red Sox became sold on Jacoby Ellsbury based on him dunking the ball during a random basketball session.
3) I would guess most of his ilk bust, but that's true of all prospects. (R.J. Anderson)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Rays bank the savings from shipping out Edwin Jackson and possibly non-tendering Gabe Gross to bring in a tasty DH like a Milton Bradley (whom I think Joe Maddon would be great for)?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Well, they have interest in Bradley and Abreu, so they've got a really good shot of getting a proven hitter to DH and bat in the middle of the lineup. All of a sudden, The Trop looks like a good place to play. (John Perrotto)
2008-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Great song about Jean Arthur by Robbie Fulks. And Robbie is from Chicago, so maybe we can debate which town has better musicians.
(kevin from maryland)
Like Colbert, she had no middle period. That was her choice -- she decided to dial down her career as she approached middle age. It's like romantic comedy lead, romantic comedy lead... the mom in "Shane." And then very little else. Apparently she didn't much like talking about her career, either, which is too bad... I don't know that song. I'll check it out. Is there a song about Veronica Lake anywhere?

...Gabe Gross has played well lately, but you could see Bobby Abreu being a good add for the Rays. Wouldn't that be ironic given that they traded him for Kevin Stocker in one of the more infamous moves in history? (Steven Goldman)
2008-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think the Rays will end up with if the asking price for Nady remains high? Matt Murton? Nelson Cruz?
(Tommy from OPS,FL)
Gabe Gross and Matt Murton would make an interesting set of corner guys, especially if they can steal Huston Street in the deal too. (Marc Normandin)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)What is a Rays fan to do, considering the report regarding Griffey Jr.? We didn't go along with the signing of Barry Bonds, so why would we trade prospects for a player that we'd be on the hook for 16 MIL and is more injury-prone than Rocco Baldelli? Isn't Gabe Gross decent enough platooned with Gomes to basically match his stats?
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the Griffey rumors. The new Rays regime is a smart one, and they're likely to judge Griffey by his relatively minimal current value rather than his impressive accomplishments, and thus unlikely to give up much in the way of value, particularly given the hefty price tag of his contract. Gabe Gross is a thoroughly capable roleplayer, and so long as the team is doing well, they can bide their time and hope Rocco Baldelli gets healthy enough to contribute as well. (Jay Jaffe)

2008-10-02 11:00:00Thursday Playoff GamesRandom fact: The Rays have four players in today's starting lineup who were drafted out of 4-year colleges: Carlos Pena (Northeastern), Evan Longoria (Long Beach State), Gabe Gross (Auburn) and Jason Bartlett (Oklahoma). (David Laurila)
