2015-03-25 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who are some $1 relievers to target in an NL only.....like Neil Ramirez types?
(Chris from Baltimore)
Jose Valverde for sure. (Jordan Gorosh)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)How do I value Addison Reed if I just started a dynasty rebuild? I know closers should be the first thing to go in a rebuild, but I can't help but believe he's relatively stable and likely to help me when I compete again in 2-3 years. Thanks
(JoeTinker from Chicago)
Here is a list of all closers who recorded 25 or more saves in 2010: Brian Wilson (48), Heath Bell (47), Rafael Soriano (45), Joakim Soria (43), Matt Capps (42), Neftali Feliz (40), Francisco Cordero (40), Carlos Marmol (38), Billy Wagner (37), Jonathan Papelbon (37), Kevin Gregg (37), Mariano Rivera (33), David Aardsma (31), Juan Oviedo (30), Bobby Jenks (27), Ryan Franklin (27), Brad Lidge (27), Jose Valverde (26), Francisco Rodriguez (25) and Andrew Bailey (25). (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Whatever struck Jose Valverde last year in the playoffs seems to have struck the rest of the 'pen. Small sample size, too soon to panic or better fix this? if the latter how to fix? comments on what should have happened in the offseason accepted as well.
(DetroitDale from Tallahassee (eternal spring training))
Small sample, I think. That isn't to say the Tigers pen is going to be any good. But for context, the four worst bullpens by ERA (I know, I know...) are the Tigers, Yankees, Marlins, and Nationals. It's too early. (Matthew Kory)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)Why is Jose Valverde?
(Paul Sporer... diehard Tigers fan from Austin, TX)
Because he's got true closer stuff. You know: big ol' gut, already possesses 273 career saves, has those excruciatingly obnoxious mannerisms closers tend to have. That type of stuff. (Bill Parker)
2012-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is with closers and insane post-save celebrations? Right now, it seems as if the Top 3 are Fernando Rodney's Arrow-launching, Jose Valverde's wiggle-and-stomp and Brian Wilson's "rage"-filled X. Which is your favorite?
(jlarsen from chicago)
Favorite? Can I pick (D) none of the above? I also wish guys would stop untucking their shirts as soon as the last out is recorded. That's dumb. (Ian Miller)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would Jose Valverde, and his contract, make it through waivers? What kind of package could the Tigers realize from that kind of move?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
At what, roughly $7 mil a pop, you'd think he would get claimed. Of course, you can still make a trade at that point. The value of the package depends on whether it's the Dodgers on the other end of the phone. You would think he would have value to a contender. Valverde is signed for another year plus an option, so there's no pressure to make a move unless the Tigers get blown away, and the division is open enough that they're likely to need a closer again next year. (Steven Goldman)
2010-01-12 18:30:00 (link to chat)On the Tigers bullpen....is Jose Valverde significantly enough better than Kevin Gregg to warrant sacrificing a 1st round pick, more money, and more years it would take to nab Valverde? Should they just sign Gregg? Should they just pass on both? Thanks.

It's interesting because they both had almost identical K and BB rates last season, and throughout their careers have been equals in terms of allowing home runs. Valverde is also just three months Gregg's senior. If Valverde can be had at a reasonable rate, he is probably the better bet, but nothing is certain with relievers and if I had the choice between Gregg at 1-yr/$3 mil and Valverde at 2-yr/$14 mil I would ink the former 100% of the time. I'm very anti-doling out lucrative deals to pitchers that log 45 innings per season. (Eric Seidman)
