2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat) | With Angel Pagan broken and Gregor Blanco going 0-for-2014, what realistic CF move can Sabean make at the deadline? (drmorris75 from SF) | Center fielders aren't cheap at the deadline. I'd normally say Drew Stubbs but you'd have to buy high. But focus on someone who can play defense mostly and not embarrass themselves swinging a bat. (Matt Sussman) |
2013-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi R.J., Do you see any possible non-tendered players to serve as a right-handed hitting platoon partner for Gregor Blanco? (Cal Guy from Cali) | Assuming we're not doing anything crazy, like making Justin Turner change positions, then no I don't. (R.J. Anderson) |
2012-11-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What moves do you see the Giants making to fill their outfield? (baseballjunkie from SF) | Thanks for the question, baseballjunkie.
I don't expect the Giants to do anything fancy - in fact, it seems that Sabean is once again prioritizing retaining the players who contributed to the championship run. With Pence staying in right field, I think they'll do their best to re-sign Pagan, and perhaps simply add a better reserve outfielder than Xavier Nady to share time with Gregor Blanco in left. Blanco doesn't exactly fit the power-hitting left fielder profile, but he does a lot of other things well and could be an adequate, cheap starter. (Daniel Rathman) |
2012-09-05 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you envision Xavier Nady making an impact for the gyros (knock on wood) we make the playoffs? Or is he just a filler (Cain you suck my posey from SF) | I don't see Nady making a big impact, but he's better now than Francisco Peguero is, which is what the Giants need. I'd still rather see Gregor Blanco out there for his glove, but anyone who won't hack at sliders darting for their back foot is an upgrade at the moment. (Daniel Rathman) |
2011-11-16 13:30:00 (link to chat) | What other moves do you predict the Giants will make? Give me something.... Anything (Tbirds from Seattle) | The Giants signed Gregor Blanco this morning. What, you want more? Starving children in San Diego have to make do with Mark Kotsay, and you're complaining? Finish your vegetables.
Are there any other lefty relievers out there they could sign? Does the sight of Ryan Ludwick excite you? (Ben Lindbergh) |
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jay, how do the Braves fix their absolute mess of an outfield, now and down the road? (steveomd from Ohio) | Start by pulling the ol' switcheroo the next time the traveling secretary hands out plane tickets to Jeff Francoeur and Garret Anderson, maybe something along the lines of a flight to Tijuana via Nova Scotia.
I'd start with the assumption that McLouth should be playing a corner position (does he have the arm for right?), platoon Gregor Blanco and Omar Infante in center, at least until you're satisfied Schafer is ready, and try to find a lefty bat that can match with Matt Diaz in left. And look forward to the day when Jason Heyward is ready (two years?). (Jay Jaffe) |
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Joe -- What's the correct solution to the Jeff Francoeur situation? Stick with him? Send him to AAA? Try to trade him? If they went with option 2 or 3, who should they plug in to RF? They don't seem to have many options. (Brent from Raleigh) | The correct solution is to play someone better. The Braves don't really have that option, however, so you stick with him until that someone comes along. I'd get Gregor Blanco back into the mix, myself, but then again, I would have had him as the everyday CF or LF to start the season.
If the Braves stay in contention, they will have to trade for a corner OF. There's just no other way. (Joe Sheehan) |
2008-06-13 14:00:00 (link to chat) | As a Braves fan, I'd like to know why the Braves don't realize that Gregor Blanco is a terrible starter. (Disgruntled Braves Fan from ATL) | I wouldn't say TERRIBLE. With Kotsay out, who would you play? You don't have a lot of options. The problem right now, in my opinion, is that the Braves are starting an outfield that doesn't hit for very much power; but, what are their choices? At least, Blanco brings two above average skill sets to the table--on base % and speed. (Jon "Boog" Sciambi) |
2008-05-05 12:30:00 (link to chat) | What is your view of Gregor Blanco? I never really heard about him as a prospect despite good minor league numbers but he has really jumped on the scene this year with the Braves. (Frank from Atlanta) | I mean, Blanco is what he is. It doesn't surprise me that in a sample size, he can come up to the Major Leagues and draw some walks and find some holes. With good pitch selection, runs like this shouldn't be that surprising. But as he regresses some, and with a .433 BABIP he'll be regressing for sure, you're going to see a guy with next-to-no power that hits singles and draws walks. You have to hit a lot of singles to be valuable like that, but there's worse bench guys out there. (Bryan Smith) |
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm a Braves fan. Could you please explain why you think Mark Kotsay, at $2Million a year, and some possible talent from the minors, is better than about a hundred different guys you could find in the minors for nothing? Kotsay's a lousy ballplayer, and your organization, in particular, shouldn't be shy about pointing that out. (rrentaurn from Boise) | I don't think I was, but I try to also see things as Frank Wren does in terms of understanding the possible upside. And like you, I don't believe it. Not that I had any faith in Josh Anderson, but Gregor Blanco has some value. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who do you like in CF for the Braves to start the season? IF they decide to go with in house options how much are they putting thier playoff hopes in jeopardy? (basicslop from Albuquerque) | There's no good out-of-house options left, although I suppose they're one team that could wait a month for Mike Cameron to return. Gregor Blanco is a pumped-up fourth outfielder who wouldn't totally kill them.
Josh Anderson is the wrong answer, I know that much. (Joe Sheehan) |
