2015-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | where do you get your pitch fx data for studies? (Julien from Montreal) | At BP, we have a database that Harry Pavlidis and Dan Brooks maintain (the Pitch Info data, with Harry's special classifications). In my pre-BP days, I used the R package pitchRx (by Carson Sievert). Jeff Zimmerman also maintains a database in SQL format at his website (baseballheatmaps.com) (Rob Arthur) |
2015-02-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Did you catch Jeff Zimmerman's 'Zobrist' values on FanGraphs to identify unheralded prospects? Cubs had 7 of the top 50 on the list. Coincidence or are they doing something institutionally along the same lines to identify hidden value?
http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/final-2014-zobrist-values/ (brentdaily from colorado) | I don't think so. Zobrist seems heavily tilted towards older players, so it's probably something more to do with that than skills. Older dudes have more pop and more patience, that's all. (Harry Pavlidis) |
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Has there ever been a healthy Canadian pitcher? I'm looking at Harden, Gagne, Dempster, Bedard, Jeff Zimmerman, Loewen, Shawn Hill, Scott Mathieson. About the only counterpoint would be Paul Quantrill. Maybe the Mariners should be dealing Aumont before it's too late. (paulbellows from Calgary) | There's something here and I'd question a lot of northern pitchers as well. If a pitcher does not throw enough when the growth plates are open, he won't get the proper humeral retroversion. Without it, he can't pitch at a major league level. My guess is that it's harder to get enough throwing done when it's cold, but there's a lot of research being done on this now. (Will Carroll) |
