2015-10-07 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Marcus Semien made a cr@pload of errors, ok 'only' 35 actually, at short. Please evaluate his defense skills. (Paul from DC) | Hmmm... I was thinking a Cubs/Pirates chat, but what the heck, I'll do more stuff. Christina Kahrl wrote about this, Semien has really improved defensively in the second half, a lot of that has to do with working under Ron Washington. I was doubtful, but apparently he's someone they believe can really stick there now. (Sahadev Sharma) |
2014-08-15 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you have 32ish more gut punch one liners for the Rangers already teed up or do they just come to you? (JP from TX) | Writing the Hit List is really fun. Or a giant chore, but mostly it's really fun. There are some teams that are just easier to write about. For some reason I can never seem to come up with something on the Cardinals. The list will be almost finished and I'll look up and it'll be the Cardinals and some other team still to go. [shakes fist] Cardinals! But the Rangers aren't that way. They're, I guess, more interesting. Adrian Beltre and Ron Washington and pitcher injuries and it never hurts to crash and burn because that's always good material. So, no, I don't have them teed up. They just come to me, but those are the easy ones. [shakes fist] Cardinals!! (Matthew Kory) |
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I had Leonys Martin penciled in as a keeper for a starting OF spot this year, but Ron Washington now says otherwise. Any thoughts on AL minor leaguers who might be making an impact come June/July? (ChuckR from Chicago) | Wash said as long as guys stay healthy, which is impossible for Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz. Martin is very near the top of such a list. Also, Mike Trout's a possibility given injuries or trades, Joe Benson in Minnesota, Jacob Turner (if he doesn't start the year with the team), the Oakland pitchers (Peacock, Parker, Milone to a lesser extent), and Danny Hultzen for Seattle. (Derek Carty) |
2011-11-16 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Do you believe we will ever see a female on field manager in our lifetime? (Sasha Grey from Chatsworth) | How long are we going to live? Unless Ray Kurzweil is right and the Singularity is actually near, I don't think so. It's not that a woman couldn't be a better tactical skipper than, say, Ron Washington, but given how hard it's been for some men without experience as major-league players to command respect in the clubhouse (even if they played in the minors), I have a hard time imagining a group of players open-minded enough to accept a female manager. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2011-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Ron Washington the best manager ever or what?? (pieman1121 from China, Maine) | Neither manager distinguished themselves in the World Series just past, and I can't help but wonder if that had something to do with Tony LaRussa's decision to hang 'em up. (Steven Goldman) |
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you laugh when I say Ron Washington is an idiot and that I could do a better job? Because it's true. For what it's worth you could do a better job too. Yet here he is in the World Series. (Mane from LA) | Yes, I laugh. You would be a horrible major league manager and so would I. That in-game tactical stuff that drives you nuts is a single-digit percentage of the job, and the other 90+% you'd be totally clueless on and you'd lose the team. This is not Strat-o-Matic, sorry. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2011-09-06 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Steve, presuming that the Yanks could legally and non-nefariously control whether they win the East or the Wild Card, which team would be the better ALDS opponent for them, Detroit or Texas/LAA?
Or would having homefield advantage through the AL playoffs dictate winning the division, matchups be damned? (Shaun P. from Medway, MA) | Yo, Shaun of Medway where an ex-girlfriend of mine just might live... Maybe she's your maid. I'm still skeptical the Angels will make it, but if they do, facing Weaver, Haren, and Santana in Games 1-3 of a postseason series would be pretty scary. The Tigers you get Verlander, Fister, and Scherzer, but you have to question which Fister and Scherzer would show up. I don't want to dismiss the Rangers too easily. Not sure how Ron Washington will organize his postseason rotation. A team that can put up three lefties in four games is darned interesting. (Steven Goldman) |
2011-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" sounds like an explanation of Ron Washington's usage of Feliz (Josh G from Stockton) | This is funny. (Jason Parks) |
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Ben,
What do you think of Alexi Ogando? Can he maintain being a dominant starter as he's shown in his first two starts? (SnakeDoctor18 from New York, NY) | I like Ogando--he was effective out of the pen last season, even if he couldn't convince Ron Washington to use him in any high-leverage spots. I don't think he'll continue to be this dominant, though, since I'm not sure his control or luck are this good. You wonder if he'll run out of gas at some point, too. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Did you realize that Ron Washington made the most subtle of moves installing Moreland for the entire series over Cantu regardless of pitcher?
Game One was the silent Buckner-Stapleton moment no one mentioned at 1B on Gradner's hustle hit. Can you explain the world of difference it made to the Rangers overall success? (Mattgabby from NYC) | I liked the decision to sit Cantu after ALCSG1 quite a bit, but that was less about the defense that the fact that Moreland's hit lefties in the minors, and it wasn't like Pettitte and Sabathia are guys with big platoon splits; indeed, Pettitte's been bass-ackwards as often as not. (Christina Kahrl) |
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | You were among those critical of Ron Washington's bullpen usage in the LCS. As a Rangers fan, Wash's in-game tactics have perplexed me in the past, but he handles his players in such a way that they trust him unconditionally and would run through a brick wall if he asked them to.
As an analyst, do you consider whether a manager's tactical flaws are outweighed by his player-handling abilities? (James from Stamford, Texas) | More so today than perhaps ever before, in part because of the metastasized media culture we live in, and in part because these days the game's about as tactically inert--particularly on offense--as it can get. (Christina Kahrl) |
2010-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I can slug .299 for a season if I get on base, steal bases at a good clip and flash the leather, right? (Elvis Andrus from Anaheim) | You can as long as Ron Washington keeps writing your name into the lineup. If you're asking me whether you can slug .299 and still be a valuable player, the answer is still yes, but, you know, you might want to try to hit a homer next season. I mean, it wouldn't hurt. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2010-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I love the fact that the Rangers are winning, but is Ron Washington not the worst game manager in baseball? I mean David Murphy in the 3 hole, Bengie Molina batting betweeen Hamilton and Nellie Cruz. I know that he's a "player's" manager and all, but you could see the disgust in Hambone's face when Wash bunted Molina to get to Cruz after a leadoff double...ok done ranting...thoughts? (ramjam36 from Fort Worth, Tx) | I haven't seen enough of his day-to-day nature to know if he's a problem in that sense, but I've heard some odd things about sac bunts and lineup placement this year. (Marc Normandin) |
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Ron Washington tests positive for Cocaine last year. Ramifications? Does it affect how he interacts w/Josh Hamilton? (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | I couldn't say one way or another about Hamilton, and I don't know what the ramifications might be. Well, this all happened last year, and he went to rehab. Washington isn't dysfunctional as a manager, so while this was something to get a handle on, I'd rather see him still taken seriously than stigmatized and flat-out fired. As a social issue, dealing with issues of addiction actively, instead of sweeping them under the rug... it seems like a step in the right direction as far as policy. (Christina Kahrl) |
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | ...is the feeling about Delmon good or bad? I guess what I am trying to say is, is your gut feeling like Ron Washington's gut feeling or something altogether different? (Ron from Vancouver) | It's a good feeling. I think we could see a big step forward this year. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2010-02-16 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Who's the first manager fired this year? Over/under on the date? (Bill from New Mexico) | How about a sleeper pick: Ron Washington. How about an even deeper sleeper pick: Joe Girardi. (Russell A. Carleton) |
2009-10-02 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Joe, please tell Ron Washington, Michael Young, and the hoards of Ranger fans that signing Marlon Byrd in free agency is a bad idea... (Lincoln from Dallas) | The devil is in the details. I'd take Byrd back on a two-year deal for the kind of money those deals usually entail. It's a lefty-heavy outfield, and Byrd's a nice fourth OF. If it takes more than that, or any kind of PT assurance, you have to let him go. (Joe Sheehan) |
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Taylor Teagarden ran over Ron Washington's dog, right? We have proof of this don't we? (Hawkeye from Grafton, ND) | Teagarden is awful, just hideous, with a bat in his hands. I think he might eventually be Ron Karkovice. (Joe Sheehan) |
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Didn't Ron Washington get along OK with Bradley last year? I don't recall hearing anything otherwise, but I'll defer to you on it. (Richie from Washington) | Washington says he did, at any rate... I'm going to have to cut things off a little early today as I'm due up at Yankee Stadium, so just a few more. (Steven Goldman) |
2008-12-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | It's up to you, who do you sign to be the Rays' DH in 2009? Giambi/Abreu/Burrell/Dunn/Bradley? Go. (Erik from The Trop) | I'd rank them in precisely the opposite order you did. I'd be very curious to see whether Dunn would respond to Joe Madden's style. Speaking of Bradley, I had a long but off record conversation with Ron Washington where I came away amazingly impressed with Washington. There are people in the game (and in life) that just have "it" and Washington is one of them. (Will Carroll) |
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on our Rangers this year? Specifically, is Cruz for real? And how do Salty and Teagarden shake out? (Chad from Dallas) | I'm not sold on Cruz, though Ron Washington says he would be their cleanup hitter if the season started today. As far as the catching, I love Teagarden's defense and believe Saltalamacchia will eventually have to move out from behind the plate. My gut tells me Max Ramirez will have the best career of all of the Rangers' catchers. (John Perrotto) |
2008-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think I'm going to fire Jon Daniels and/or Ron Washington after the season? (Nolan Ryan from Arlington, Texas) | Why would you? In Hamilton and Kinsler, the Rangers have two franchise players to build around. It's been a losing year, but one in which the organization has made progress. (Nate Silver) |
2008-08-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Am I going to fire Jon Daniels and/or Ron Washington this offseason? (Nolan Ryan from Arlington, TX) | You'd be an idiot to do that and you're not an idiot. (Will Carroll) |
2008-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Rangers fandom holds its collective breath for Milton 'Yahtzee!' Bradley's well-being.
Should I break out the tissues, or is there cause for a synchronized sigh of relief? (Or from Dallas) | Should be ok. The quad "grabs" on him every once in a while, but Bradley plays in pain pretty well. My worry is that he pushes it too much. Ron Washington and Jamie Reed do a pretty good job of holding him in check. (Will Carroll) |
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat) | What can be expected of John Patterson this year? His velocity is way down..building up arm strength or done?
Will C. Maybin start the year in the minors?
Who do you think will be the best rookie pitcher NL this year? (Barb from NY) | I don't have high expectations for Patterson this year; neither Texas as an organization or Ron Washington as a manager have track records that involve lots of successful retreadings of journeymen. Maybe it works, but Patterson's going from the NL and a park (RFK) that, when he was healthy, helped him, and he's going to the DH league, a spotty defense, and a tough park. These things tend to not work out so tidily.
Maybin's already down in Double-A, a move that's to the Marlins' credit. Best rookie pitcher in the NL? Kuroda, if you count the imports. (Christina Kahrl) |

2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | Regardless of whether or not Price comes out, I'm interested to see how quickly Ron Washington gets Borbon in center; the only lefty in the Raypen is Randy Choate, and the odds that he gets employed to go after Borbon seems fairly small. 2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | FWIW: Five players in today's starting lineup have been the subject of a Prospectus Q&A. A sixth player, David Price, was the subject of a shorter, Unfiltered interview. Joe Maddon and Ron Washington have also been Prospectus Q&As. (David Laurila) |
2009-10-21 17:00:00 | NLCS Game 5 | AJM (Lone Star State): What about Vlad going to Texas to DH, replacing the dynamic duo of Andruw Jones and Hank Blalock? What is this, an Enron joke? Dynamic:Hank Blalock::Sparklessness:Batteries. I figure a reunion of Ron Washington's Rangers and Milton Bradley still makes a lot more sense, especially if you get the Cubs to eat cro^^^^HHHH... money on the exchange. (Christina Kahrl) |
