2011-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)So, Emma, how DO you pronounce "Honus Wagner"?
(ssimon from Pelham, NY)
As I learned on Tuesday - from Steve Goldman, who ought to know - it's "HA-nes," not HO-nuss as I'd been saying my entire life until then. Whoops! (Emma Span)
2011-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)More importantly, where do we find the Honus Wagner slashfic?
(Jobert from TX)
Ha. Go forth and Google, if you dare... (Emma Span)
2009-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Re: "The Yankees got no offense from shortstop whatsoever between Rizzuto's 1950 and Derek Jeter's 1996." Roy Smalley, Jr. was a fairly potent offensive shortstop in '82 and '83, though he faded quickly. The Yanks' decision to trade for him, I thought was a good one, though it didn't work out - sort of shortstop version of the Javier Vasquez trade - great idea, bad outcome.
(RHughes from NJ)
That's true. The Yankees failed to realize that injuries had pretty much stripped Smalley of whatever range he might have had, with the result that though he was about twice the hitter that Bucky Dent was (well, to be fair, Bucky was done, so Smalley was infinitely better), he looked very poor in comparison on defense. The only thing that gets me about that trade is that they gave up Greg Gagne, who wasn't Honus Wagner, but they certainly oculd have used him a couple of years down the line. (Steven Goldman)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)What do you think the chances are of the Brewers getting something going on JJ Hardy? It seems that with Escobar hanging around the Crew has a quality ss to deal and a few quality teams (Red Sox, Angels, Cubs) aren't exactly blessed with Honus Wagner out there. If the Brewers play it right they could have a bigger chip than Holliday come late July.
(Joe from Tewksbury, MA)
I think the problem is that I don't think Escobar's ever going to be as good as Hardy, even as I think Escobar's going to be entirely playable. The question is whether anyone would give them enough good stuff to land Hardy, and there, we'll have to see, because he's squared away for free agency after 2010, and anyone who'd want to give up good stuff for him should want more than a year and two months' worth of playing time. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Steven. I'm looking for a good book on the 1918 World Series, any sugestions? Also, any good Honus Wagner bios out there you'd recommend? Thanks.
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
There have been a few Wagner bios, but if a definitive one exists I haven't yet found it. BTW, I'm currently enjoying (full disclosure: my good friend) Allen Barra's new biography of Yogi Berra. I know there are books out there on the 1918 Red Sox, but no single volume is leaping to mind right now. Perhaps a reader will suggest one. (Steven Goldman)
2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)"Forging Genius" is what got me interested in reading about the early years of baseball. I'd like to learn more about the Pirates of Honus Wagner. I have Christy Mathewson's "Pitching in a Pinch", which is a lot of fun.
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
I like Charles Einstein's bio of John McGraw as well. More than 75 years after his death, McGraw remains one of the most compelling figures ever to be involved with baseball. (Steven Goldman)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of the Nats' 38th round pick in this year's draft? Future stud or Future Farmer of America? (You're the prospect guy, right?)
(GBSimons from Loganville, GA)
Tradition! If they picked Honus Wagner I think he's a coming star, and I can tell you a great deal about him, right down to precisely what he's going to hit in his age-27 season. (Steven Goldman)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Honus Wagner.
(Stanky from DC)
You can't go wrong. (Steven Goldman)
2008-02-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Cedeno goes to Baltimore will he play SS? Will he resemble something of major league quality?
(LindInMoskva from DC)
I think he's a average, slightly-above defender who'll hit .270/.330/.390. That can play. It looks like Honus Wagner compared to the available options. (Joe Sheehan)

2010-07-13 16:30:00All-Star GameA proof of the T206 series, including the Honus Wagner card, fetched $316K at auction today. That strikes me as low, even considering condition. Don't people have vast sums of disposable wealth anymore? (Tommy Bennett)
