2010-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Daric Barton ever becoming more than a poor man's Mark Grace?
(Tom from Madison)
No. Barton has his uses as a hitter but he's not as good a consistent gap hitter as Grace became. (John Perrotto)
2009-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Before this year, Mauer's numbers looked like Mark Grace's, but if he keeps up those numbers with his defense, he should make the HOF. Now that he's hitting for power, is he a good enough hitter to make the HOF as a firstbaseman?
(Wendy from Madrid)
Wendy, you're going two different directions here and it's confusing. Mauer's hitting, which has always been good, has evolved into a superfantastic performance which is probably unsustainable (.371 EqA? Get out). His defense behind the dish has always been above average according to our numbers, but there are very real concerns with his prolonged presence at catcher and what it will mean to his physical condition. He's certainly on his way to building a reasonable Hall of Fame case, but he's got just five full seasons under his belt and isn't even 27 yet! We'll need to see a lot more before we understand where he'll fit in among the greats. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)I don't mind Mark Grace as a Sandoval comp. Gwynn & Puckett are too durned good yet; he's gotta earn thossens. Thoughts on Wandy moving forward this year?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Nomination for Grace. He's got a 3.74 FIP, and I love his peripherals. Always been a Wandy fan, so I would hold on to him. (Marc Normandin)
2009-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any tips for a fan who needs to quit smoking? I don't smoke more than 5-7 a day, but none is too many. Do any MLB players smoke? Would we even know? It's been a long time since Guy LaFleur would smoke on the bench between shifts.
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Go to a hospital and watch someone suffering from the effects of lung (or any) cancer. I don't know of any players that smoke, but I'm sure there are. The last I remember is Mark Grace. (Will Carroll)
2008-01-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Bryan, looking at your talent list for college juniors, I missed the section on Pitchers. Did I miss something or do you follow the Mark Grace premise that pitchers have no athletic talent.
(USDFan from San Diego)
Don't worry, I'll be hitting on pitchers in my column tomorrow. It's a good year for pitching at the college level, with a lot of guys on the bubble between second half of the first round and third round. (Bryan Smith)

2008-10-13 17:00:00NLCS Game FourGary - you just missed Mark Grace, sitting in Karros' spot. The answer? Yes, it can get worse. And likely will. Why do they insist on misusing Ken Rosenthal? (Will Carroll)
