2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Vladdy done enough for a Cooperstown plaque? If no, what more does he need?
(achaik from maine)
As I wrote last summer, he's a bit short (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9416), and he's actually even shorter now with a more recent set of numbers, first because the system hates his defense and second because the bar at RF is high (Ruth, Aaron, Ott, Frank Robinson).

That said, with productivity into his late 30s via a couple more years like this one, his bat will compare favorably, and in the end, that's what's going to sell his case to the public. 500 homers would be a good idea for him (he's at 427). (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Pujols on pace to be one of the 10 best hitters ever? Which bats of these greats would you rather have at the same age over Pujols: Foxx, Mantle, Gehrig, Ruth, Williams, DiMaggio, Musial, Frank Thomas, Frank Robinson, Aaron, and Mays?
(greg from toronto)
Pujols may well be a top 10 guy. Manny Ramirez might be too, along with some of those other guys you list, plus a fella named Bonds.

I don't have enough time to get into the age-related argument at the moment, but I'll note that I've got an article in the pipeline that could look at the big-picture topic more closely.

OK folks, I've gone well past my pitch count, and my dance card for the rest of the day is full, starting with a Toledo radio hit at 4:05. So I'll take one more. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-07-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe Posnanski made a good case for Stan Musial as one of the best living ballplayers the other day... where is he on your list?
(BL from Bozeman, MT)
Where's Jay Jaffe when I need him? I don't keep lists like this, but it would definitely be behind Willie Mays. It isn't like it's ever going to be an Olympic event, where Musial's got to stand around on a podium and subsequently explain his disappointment for getting the bronze behind Mike Schmidt or Frank Robinson or something. Maybe I'm being lazy, but Mays seems like a solid enough selection for an off-the-cuff answer. ;) (Christina Kahrl)
