2011-08-26 16:00:00 (link to chat)Was there any consideration by the Braves' front office to claiming John McDonald off waivers? It seems he would be a better utility infield fit than Julio Lugo at this point in their respective careers.
(Chris from Alabama)
We consider every player on waivers and talk about it on a daily basis. I can't comment on specific trade negotiations (or the lack thereof), but we run through every name and are continuously looking for ways to upgrade our club. (John Coppolella)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there something criminal about how Boston manages its roster? If you throw a couple of bad games in a row for us you just suddenly disappear...In fact I'm surprised Dice-K escaped from his holding facility long enough to get a garbled message out to the Japanese press.
(Rob from Brighton, MA)
I heard Julio Lugo told Dice-K about the secret passage he dug in the back of his holding cell. They have covered that up since though. (Marc Normandin)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)RE: Zito, Soriano, Wells, you wonder if this is something that GM's get drunk and brag about. Like maybe Dayton Moore starts off, "Ha, I still can't believe I kept my job after I gave 36 large to Jose Guillien." Then Theo ups the ante with "Yeah, well I'm paying $15 mil to have Julio Lugo play for the Cardinals." Meanwhile, somewhere out in the cold Bill Bavasi swills Wild Rose and begs for quarters.
(Rob from Brighton, MA)
Don't worry, Bill. I'm sure the Nationals will hire you once they stop thinking of ways to ruin the team with their current personnel. (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)How come the Twins haven't signed Julio Lugo yet? Given their sinkhole of production at 2b - Lugo seems like a sizeable upgrade.
(goiter6 from MN)
Do the Twins really want Julio Lugo to play 2B? From what I've seen of Lugo this season, he simply doesn't possess the athleticism anymore. Maybe it's the knee, or maybe it's the aging process, or maybe its both or something else. Regardless, he reminds me a lot of Jose Offerman when he played in Boston -- a speedy free-agent sign who all too quickly became a middle infielder without range who could no longer motor around the base paths. Lacking plus power, Offerman became little more than a singles hitter who did else well. Given that the Red Sox opted to keep Nick Green instead, is that not what Lugo is right now? (David Laurila)
2009-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)"...is an over 30 second basemen who's stretched at shortstop and can't really hit well enough to justify starting at either position." This statement most accurately describes: Nick Green, Julio Lugo, or both.
(Rob from Brighton)
Both, but I have much less anger stored up for Nick Green at present. (Marc Normandin)
2009-03-10 14:30:00 (link to chat)How do you see the Julio Lugo/Jed Lowrie situation shaking out at SS? Is there really anybody who'd take on Lugo's deal at this point?
(Joe from Boston)
Hard to see the Yankees and Sox doing a deal, but they could have Lugo play third for two months and then he'd be a pretty good UT afterwards. There's no argument for playing Lugo over Lowrie. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think the Red Sox should do about Julio Lugo? OK, now what WILL they do about him?
(mattymatty from Philly)
Re: Ramirez question--forgot about the options being eliminated. OK, I think he'll get four years and $22 million or more, and I lean towards the Yankees getting him and finding homes for Matsui and Damon.

Lugo has served as a utility guy before, and he has enough speed to be a viable bench player, so give him Alex Cora's job, with maybe a bit more playing time. He can also play a little third if you want. The Red Sox have a lot of flexibility. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Marc, Edgar Renteria's stinking up my team, giving me near replacement level production. Given his track record and what I coughed up to get him, do I pick up his option for 09 or what?
(Dave D. from Detroit)
Absolutely not. You find yourself a shortstop, but don't get sucked into a Julio Lugo trade. As much as I'd love to drop Lugo on an unsuspecting customer, it's not nice to play mean tricks on others. (Marc Normandin)
