2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can't we all feel more comfortable with an opening class of 10 of Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Walter Johnson, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Honus Wanger?
(Bernard from Jersey City)
That's a great place to start. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any top 5 right hander list without Pedro Martinez is criminal. In the immortal words of KLaw, 5 dollars.
(Bagel from San Diego, CA)
It's a peak/career question, with some "timeline" built in. Is there any real way to compare Walter Johnson and Pedro Martinez? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Steve, thanks for chatting. Which pitcher do you believe was the fastest ever at delivering a baseball? Steve Dalkowski?
(ripfan008 from Baltimore)
I don't think I've ever seen footage of Dalkowski, but I like cuing up films of Walter Johnson's delivery and watching him sling the ball in with that three-quarters delivery and his long, long arms. He probably wasn't as fast as some of today's big arms, just based on superior conditioning and nutrition today but he would probably still be competitive. I realize that doesn't quite answer your question, but it's probably as close as I can come just now. (Steven Goldman)
2008-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)In 2002, The DBacks won 29 of the 35 games Randy Johnson started. Considering that the vast majority of teams win between 37% and 62% of their games, and 62% of 35 is only 22 wins...couldn't you make an argument that you should start your new franchise with a dominant pitcher? I'd like to put those 29 Ws in the bank. (The DBacks scored 819 runs as a team, but won 98 games.)
(Adam from DC)
Let me combine this with Charlie of Bethesda's question about Walter Johnson. I think so much of pitching is contextual that I'd rather get run support and defense lined up instead. But this is all hypothetical, and we're talking about guys so far above replacement level that I'm not sure you could really make a bad call. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)How does the Big Unit not even get mentioned in a nickname discussion?
(tfierst from MN)
He absolutely should. Great nickname, a pitcher's nickname, to go with the aforementioned Big Six and Walter Johnson, the Big Train. (Steven Goldman)
2008-02-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you could go back in time to watch one game, what would it be? I often think it might be the Merkle boner game, though I don't like being jostled by crowds and would thus spend 8 innings seeking high ground. Second choice for me: the game where Satchel Paige called in the outfield and infield in pitching to Josh Gibson, though that might be apocryphal and could break my time machine. How about you?
(oira61 from San Francisco)
That's a really tough call. I saw the Reggie 3-HR World Series game on TV when I was a tyke. That might be cool. Any game where Ted Williams had a couple of hits... The game where Casey Stengel let a bird fly out from under his cap... Any game Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson pitched... Satchel Paige in his prime would be VERY cool to see. Great call there. (Steven Goldman)
