2011-01-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Tell me they're moving the fences in a bit before my contract is up . . .
(Jason Bay from Citi Canyon)
I hope they don't. What I hope they do is engage Whitey Herzog as a consultant and start building with the park in mind. (Steven Goldman)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)But wouldn't it be beneficial for ALL wannabe managers to play lots of Strat and see how to construct a lineup, work through double-switches, warm up relievers, engage in situational hitting?
(dianagramr from NYC)
A few years ago, I suggested that it would be really cool to launch sort of a seminar series, where you could have minor-league managers and coaches listen to Chuck Tanner or Whitey Herzog talk about the running game, or to Earl Weaver or Dick Williams about in-game tactics, or the late Johnny Sain to talk about workloads. But that would be collective, and the industry favors competition; why let Whitey Herzog talk to anybody else, if you want to hear what he has to say? Put him on the payroll as an adviser, and don't share. As is, in-game tactics aren't exactly rocket science--indeed, much of the stuff sabermetrics "discovers" on this front simply documents previously observed and understood phenomena, going back not just to Earl Weaver or Whitey Herzog, but Casey Stengel or Joe McCarthy. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Phil Hughes staying or going?
(Eric from Manorville)
Bunch of questions about Phil Hughes, though it's possible they're all from the same fellow under multiple aliases. Mom, is that you? Actually, I doubt my mom thinks about Phil Hughes much. She might think about Mickey Mantle sometimes... I think he should stay, and the Yankees will get their reward for putting up with the inconsistency -- ultimately, he'll break through. Now that's what I think, not necessarily what they'll do when/as/if Wang looks ready and Hughes hasn't made a stronger impression, and maybe you can't argue about it if they're still competitive at that point. If they're just string along as they are currently, maybe it's a different matter.

...I should have mentioned Paul Richards before in that manager question. Before my time, but he seemingly had a lot on the ball. In a minor key way, I've also wondered why Jim LeFebrve didn't get more respect given what he accomplished with the M's and the Cubs.

...And why isn't Whitey Herzog in the HOF? (Steven Goldman)
2008-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)I love false nostalgia for a fake time in baseball...everything about Baseball in the 80's was an attempt to make it like other sports...multi-purpose stadiums all around, awful "modern" jerseys (Astros, White Sox, etc.) Emphasis on the speed game to make it "faster" . . . bad times. Baseball was trying to be something it wasn't. Look at the attendance...Baseball in the 80's stunk.
(George W. from Alexandria, VA)
You mean after the owners got together and decided to collude on salaries, they also colluded on offensive styles as well? You've completely misread history. Few teams emphasized speed to the exclusion of all else, principally the Cardinals, and that was only because that's how Whitey Herzog figured he could make his park work for him. Others had select players who could run and run really well, like Rickey Henderson or Eric Davis, but could also get on base and hit the ball out of the park. In many ways it was a more dynamic game, with all of those styles coming together to make a really varied offense. I would argue it was the apotheosis of all the eras that came before it, the truce between the lively ball and previous era of "inside baseball" and thus the epitome of baseball, a sampling of everything that made the game great... No defending the cookie cutter parks, but those were mostly the offspring of the 1970s and proved to be really transient. (Steven Goldman)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are Sabean/MacGowan being unfairly targeted in this Mitchel Probe? To me, singling them out as the ONLY front office with a shred of culpability is simply ridiculous. Singled out player is to Singled out Front Office as Barry Bonds is to Sabean/MacGowan??
(ericmilburn from San Luis Obispo)
Was there anything about Tuesday's non-event on the Hill that wasn't ridiculous? Well, unless you were Miguel Tejada, I suppose, but let's face it, if preening was an Olympic sport, I'm pretty sure we saw some of the medalists in action.

There isn't a GM, manager, or owner who deserves a free pass on this issue. It was an industry-wide problem, and unlike the game's uneven (and unfair) responses to the cocaine issue in the '80s, it wasn't like anybody from the last 20 years was playing Whitey Herzog and publicly stating "clean up or play for somebody else." The responsibility is pretty obviously collective, as it is with amphetamines. (Christina Kahrl)
