2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Off the top of your head, who are two or three very credible options for the Hall that few casual fans or even BP readers would see as such? Will Clark? Trammell? In other words, in your extensive research on the topic, who's really surprised you with good candidancies?
(Grant from Chicago)
Bobby Grich is one. Will Clark another. Bill Dahlen and Rick Reuschel are two guys whose JAWS scores are near the line that nobody ever thinks of. Dahlen I can see, Reuschel I'm not even convinced of. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any pre-WWII players you're cheering for in the Veterans Committee process?
(BL from Bozeman)
When the VC ballot came around in December I took a look via JAWS (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8353) and among the pre-WWII players I came up with Bill Dahlen, Wes Ferrell and Bucky Walters as Hallworthy. I'd particularly like to see the first two get in sooner or later. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jay - I would say it's a given that Henderson and Rice be inducted by the BBWAA this year. I think Raines will eventually be enshrined by the same crew, but maybe not for another 3-5 years. What are the odds that either Blyleven or Dawson make it this year? What can you say off-the-cuff about the Veteran's Committee ballot? Thanks
(rawagman from Toronto)
I'd put the odds of Blyleven and Dawson at about 1 in 4 this year simply because Rickey's a first-ballot no-brainer and Rice is on his last try. Voters tend to stage their votes to accommodate such things.

Re: the VC, I haven't commented on it yet, and probably won't at length this time around due to time pressures. I can only beat my head against the wall over Santo so many times; I really really really double super really think he should be in the Hall of Fame. Torre's got a case as a hitter but it's his managerial credentials that make him a slam dunk, Allen has a case if you think high peak, recognize that his candidacy was poisoned by some misinformation from Bill James years back and don't worry about him missing the "playing out the string" component of his career. Bill Dahlen has always been an intriguing candidate to me, and to the extent that I know relatively little about 19th century baseball, White's numbers have always stuck out. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, Do you think of the players on the new Veteran's Committee ballot belong in the HOF? Thanks for chatting.
(collins from greenville nc)
I think Bill Dahlen does, and I'd be willing to consider Joe Gordon given the impact of World War II service on his career, but I'm far more interested in seeing cases like Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker and Dwight Evans come up for a vote than some of these oldtimers. (Jay Jaffe)
