2012-06-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should I be worried that Miguel Sano is turning into Rob Deer?
(John from MN)
I'm not a scout, so I can't speak to the specifics of his approach at the plate, but from a raw numbers standpoint, I'd be a bit worried in that Sano is striking out in 29 percent of his plate appearances. The power is there (.251 ISO) and the walks are there (14%, nearly all unintentional, and up from 8% last year), and both indicate progress as he's jumped from rookie ball to full-season A-ball in his age-19 season. The numbers still say he's a beast in the making. (Jay Jaffe)
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Pedro Alvarez on a Rob Deer type career arc?
(Craig from PA)
With what we know so far, I think Alvarez would have to be excited to get a Rob Deer career. Deer had 4500 PAs over an 11-year career. Alvarez is certainly giving us the all-or-nothing, three true outcomes type of at-bats, but we haven't seen enough to know if that's how his whole career will be. If those cold streaks last too long, he may not get a chance to show off his power.

The power surges this year have been nice, but they've been, what, once a month? You need to turn it on a little more often than that to hang around for 11 years. (Larry Granillo)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)KG, what's your take on Cody Johnson's season? Do you think he can maintain his walk rates enough at the higher levels to make his lack of contact less of an issue?
(steveomd from Georgia)
Big Rob Deer fan, Steve? (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ah, c'mon KG, he's having a nice season in a tough hitter's environment. Was just wondering if his approach/game had improved, that's all...
(steveomd from Georgia)
He's got massive power and a better approach, but he's still already has 107 whiffs in 83 games. Rob Deer isn't an insult, guy played (I'm guessing here) 12 years and made tens of millions. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-04-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jack Cust "3 True Outcomes" Award? Or does Rob Deer have the rights to that?
(Tex Premium Lager from NJ)
I think Rob Deer has that nailed down. I mean, he should. He was a pretty good ballplayer people tend to forget about.

What's strange about him too, is that you tend to think of goofy players that can't field or run when you think of some TTO guys, but Deer could field pretty well. His value wasn't just wrapped up in his homers and walks. (Marc Normandin)
2008-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Chris Young could have a long career having .230 batting averages year after year? Even if he's a 30/30 player each year?
(qwerty from poiuque)
Rob Deer with speed and the ability to play a plus center field. That's more or less the shape of Andruw Jones' career, right? (Joe Sheehan)
