2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Interesting to hear someone pump the breaks a little regarding Machado. Sounds like you are lower on him than almost everyone else I've read?
(Shawn from Office)
Yeah, I probably am. He wouldn't be the first extremely talented player who the league figured out and failed to adjust. I'm not saying he can't. He could adjust this year and take off and be among the best hitters in the game. He has the talent. But if he doesn't get a little more patience, the league will exploit his aggressiveness and he'll never hit enough to make up for it. Take a look at Juan Samuel's B-R page sometime... (Jeff Moore)
2013-02-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Baseball writers seem endlessly interested in writing about things like WAR, but there is no salary cap in MLB. It's the team ownership group that determines more than anything else whether a team will succeed and for how long. Have you ever come across an article that deeply analyzed the curious more than four decades long non-competition between the Phillies and Mets? They even completed a major trade with one another in 1989 swapping Lenny Dykstra and Juan Samuel. By some amazing coincidence the Mets and Phillies always pass one another in the standings, one on the way up, the other on the way down. Before the new caps on draft spending, for any ten year period both teams were at the bottom of the game in spending. It sure helps keep salaries in MLB from rising when two of the largest market teams in MLB refuse to compete with one another. Oh I know, the Wilpons claim they have some financial problems that have prevented them from competing with the Phillies. John Gotti claimed he sold plumbing parts for a living. Where are the financial statements to prove the claim? The Mets revenues have to dwarf the Brewers and Reds, but look at the payrolls.

2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the problem with Alexei Ramirez?
(Chris from NJ)
This has been stuck in the queue for a calendar year, I presume.

He's not that great at baseball. Good tools that enable him to do some things, but the skills are nowhere to be found. Juan Samuel with less upside. (Joe Sheehan)
