2007 The trade that brought Carter and Danny Baez to the Dodgers for Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany was sold to the public as the acquisition of a pair of All-Star relievers for a couple of prized prospects. The reality was much more pedestrian; Carter`s stint as the Rays` closer earned him token honors in 2003, but he`d long since fallen out of favor, and it didn`t take long for him to descend even further once he got to L.A. He ratcheted up his ERA nearly every time he took the hill, and, by May, was banished to Las Vegas. Though he pitched well there, a pair of unimpressive appearances in a brief recall prevented a longer look either in L.A. or points beyond. Still a free agent at this writing, he`s a good bet to grace some camp as a non-roster invitee.
2006 A flyball pitcher who doesn`t have the stuff to get away with pitching up all the time, Piniella tried him as a situational lefty for awhile, even though Carter isn`t left-handed. That worked about as well as should have been expected, and the former token Tampa All-Star was exiled to Durham for five weeks. Although the Rays have signed Carter for another season, not a lot should be expected from him. Traded to the Dodgers with Baez, perhaps he`ll benefit from the team`s traditional magic with pitchers.
2005 In one more inning than in 2003, Carter allowed five more hits and four more walks, yet allowed seven fewer runs. He was lucky. Carter's strikeout rate fell precipitously, but most of that was due to a two-month stretch in May and June when he pitched through some shoulder inflammation and only struck out five in 25 innings of work; take those two months out and you wouldn't notice the drop. It shouldn't be a danger sign for 2005, and Carter should beat that projection.
2004 Carter's newfound control has been a key to his modest success over the last couple of years. His K:BB ratio's solid if not overwhelming, he doesn't give up a ton of hits, and his peripheral ERA isn't way out of line with his actual ERA. Still, he's not particularly valuable, and certainly not as good as some of the filler relievers in places like Minnesota, Seattle, or Oakland. If he ends up making a lot of money, it'll say more about the organization that signs him as a closer than it will about Carter.
