2012-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Miguel Cairo comes off the DL for the Reds today. Fans are pessimistically expecting them to send Todd Frazier down instead of DFAing Willie Harris. Cause for concern?
(Hobart from Washington, DC)
I'd buy it if the stat lines were reversed. As is, I think Frazier stays. Everyone can joke about Dusty Baker's love of veterans, but he'll play young players if they produce, and Frazier is doing just that right now. (R.J. Anderson)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)howdy! signing thome, does it means kubel rf, cuddyer 3b, punto/casilla 2b?
(mo from las vegas)
I'll be going into this a bit in tomorrow's TA, since I expect Thome's deal and looking at the Twins' lineup options will be the most interesting part (Miguel Cairo's becoming a Red menace notwithstanding), but that would be one possible permutation. However, that would also mean complete faith in Delmon Young, which might be a tough proposition, nice September or not. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-06-02 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hi John, What's up with Towles? I expected some struggles, but he's been awful. Also, why haven't the Mariners recalled Clement? It's not like they can get any worse with him in the lineup.
(Swingingbunts from NY)
I'm a little surprised that Towles has struggled this long but Cecil Cooper seems very commited to sticking with him. I don't get the Mariners handling of Clement. They called him up, he struggled a little and they sent him right back down. It's pretty obvious they don't have much faith in him as they are playing Miguel Cairo, for crying out loud, at first base. (John Perrotto)

2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5It is utterly astounding that Miguel Cairo has played this long in the major leagues.
(John Perrotto)
2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5John Foley (Los Angeles, CA): Steven, in the even the Yanks and Phillies play one another in the World Series what will John Sterling do if Miguel Cairo comes up in a crucial pinch-hitting situation? I predict a complete shutdown reminiscent of one of Mudd's women.

Chekov: This place is even better than Leningrad.

Or like NOMAD, to give you a Star Trek reference for a Star Trek reference. His fascination with Cairo's godlike powers really borders on fetishism. He really sees things in that guy that no one else can. It's like he owns stock in the guy, the degree to which he shills for him.

Before the ball flew out, I was going to say what Christina said: there's NO ONE in the Phillies organization that has more vitality than Cairo? (Steven Goldman)
2009-10-21 17:00:00NLCS Game 5Miguel Cairo, the horror. I mean, really, with nobody aboard? And with his "ability" to reach base? I know a burn-worthy PH has his place, but this strikes me as another reminder that, when you play in a bandbox, best to find someone who has an instrument. Andy Tracy > Miguel Cairo. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-15 17:00:002009 NLCS Game One (Phillies/Dodgers)Miguel Cairo is up. Somewhere, John Sterling is experiencing an inexplicable hot flash. (Steven Goldman)

2009-10-15 17:00:002009 NLCS Game One (Phillies/Dodgers)Jonathan (New York): Matt Kemp, star or superstar?

Star now, superstar if he takes another little hop forward, which is possible given that this was just his age-24 season. It would help if he had a manager that wouldn't let him waste half his season batting in the 6/7/8 spots. I have a lot of respect for Joe Torre in many ways, but in others he reminds me of Richard Mulligan playing Custer in "Little Big Man," making oracular and nonsensical pronouncements about people's jobs ("You are a muleskinner!")that have no basis in reality. In NY, he did it with Jorge Posada, rarely batting him out of the bottom half of the order despite his power and on-base skills. Thus a Posada walk would be followed up something like a Miguel Cairo at-bat. (Steven Goldman)
2009-10-12 15:00:00Phillies/Rockies Playoffs RoundtableOf course, now the Phillies have to close it out having pulled their best reliever for Miguel Cairo... (Steven Goldman)
