2005 Bill James spent years arguing that minor league statistics—adjusting for park, league and other variables—could predict major league performance with nearly the same degree of certainty as can major league statistics. It's a tradition we've carried on and advanced here at Baseball Prospectus, and it's for this reason that we always get a kick out of seeing someone like Almanzar fare well. A career minor leaguer with only sporadic cups o' joe throughout his pro career, Almanzar parlayed his tailing fastball into a fantastic 54:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio at Triple-A in 2003. The Rangers, looking for bullpen help, took a flyer on him, despite Almanzar being 30 years old. The result? The righty showed he's more than a minor league lifer destined to put up good Triple-A stats, flashing the same effective control in 67 appearances with the big club.

Almanzar's game is far from perfect: He struggled late in the year—a forearm injury making matters worse—and he doesn't strike out enough hitters to ever have a shot at dominance. Still, there's a valuable lesson learned here: The Rangers struck gold for a year on a cheap, effective reliever. The minute Almanzar stops being effective, they'll search for another overlooked arm putting up good numbers and give him a shot. Tendered a contract, which means a bigger payday, muting the good tidings somewhat.
2004 Almanzar was at the head of a controversy in July. He and Josias Manzanillo walked away from the Louisville Bats in protest after a number of teammates were promoted while they were overlooked. While you can understand Almanzar's frustration-he was in the middle of a good year at Triple-A, featuring an obscene 54:3 K:BB ratio, and the Reds had promoted pitchers who weren't doing nearly as well-that's exactly the kind of move that gets a player branded a malcontent, which is death in baseball. He was signed by the Rangers as a minor league free agent, and will he in the mix to set up Francisco Cordero. If his improved command is for real, he'll help them a lot.
