2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Ben What are the chances that Zach Braddock will be closing this year or next? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
I guess that depends on the chances that John Axford won't be closing this year or next. Here's what we said on that subject in this year's annual:

"Relievers with walk rates that high tend to lose their grip on the closer reins as managers grow frustrated with their self-inflicted jams. While it's possible that Axford has developed a newfound ability to find the strike zone and will spend the next half-decade closing games at Miller Park, it's just as likely that Brewers fans will wake up one morning to discover that yesterday's Rollie Fingers has morphed into today's Derrick Turnbow."

I don't think Axford is about to enter Turnbow territory, but there are certainly unlikelier closer candidates than Braddock. His talents would be wasted in the bullpen, though: with a name like that, he really should've been a cowboy or a spaceship captain. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-02-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)How many games better do Greinke and Marcum make the Brewers? I know the defense isn't good, but more strikeouts rely on the defense more?
(JT from MKE)
Greinke and Marcum make them legitimate contenders. They should be in the race all year, and while I haven't even thought about making my picks yet I think I'm leaning toward picking them to win the Central. My biggest worries: Axford turning into Derrick Turnbow, an injury to Weeks, and too much Carlos Gomez. (Ken Funck)
2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hardest player name for you to spell?
(dianagramr from NYC)
I can spell Doug Mientkiewicz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia with the best of them, and I know my Derrek Lee, my Derrick Turnbow and my Derek Jeter, to say nothing of my Jarrod Washburn and my Jered Weaver and my Jaret Wright. I was a spelling bee champ in sixth grade, and also finished second in fourth and third in fifth.

The one that gets me is Mark Teahen. I ALWAYS spell it Teahan, and right now I just had to look again to see that I got it correct. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-06-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)No such thing as a "high probability" lottery ticket. You mean "high volatility" regarding Axford, no?
(Richie from Washington)
I guess you're right. But I did mean high probability--I think there's maybe a 50% chance he rounds out into a very useful major league reliever and a 50% chance he is the next Derrick Turnbow. (Tommy Bennett)
2008-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Adam Loewen: Will the screw in his arm effect his longevity? Will it put him at risk for a by-product injury? Can he still have the power arm? Other than Cal Eldred, who else has pithced with a screw in his arm? How is he doing? Thanks.
(ButkusSayers from Chicago)
I could be wrong, but I think the screw was removed. There have been a couple pitchers who have had similar injuries -- Derrick Turnbow and Bobby Jenks come to mind -- and I think Loewen should come back pretty effectively. He's "on schedule" and should be throwing at the same pace with the other pitchers when the Orioles open camp. (Will Carroll)
