BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 Second on the all-time pinch-hit list, Mark Sweeney didn’t lack opportunities to add to his total, but he never came close to finding a groove.
2008 From being implicated in Barry Bonds' failed amphetamine test, to witnessing Bonds' 756th homer, to climbing past Smoky Burgess and Manny Mota into second on the all-time pinch-hit list, to being catapulted into a playoff hunt and making a crucial, game-ending baserunning mistake, it certainly was an eventful year for Sweeney. With 163 career pinch-hits, Sweeney's unlikely to catch Lenny Harris' record 212, but because of his career .271/.364/.404 line in that role, he'll find work.
2007 Sweeney is a player who needs to be kept in a strict platoon role; letting him bat at a disadvantage even 14 percent of the time, as he did last year, is a mistake. That was easy to do all the years he spent as a pinch-hitter, but the Giants expect him to play semi-regularly at first base or left field, where it`s harder to manage. The decisions to sign Klesko and Aurilia should force him back into a reserve role.
2006 Sweeney turned in his finest season in 2005, tattooing right-handers off the bench. He hits to all fields and isn`t fazed by off-speed stuff, making him as close to the perfect pinch-hitting weapon as you`re likely to find. He`s too poor a defensive player and baserunner to be a candidate for a starting job. He`ll get plenty of action with the Giants after signing a two-year deal.
2005 It's gratifying to see Sweeney do well enough to provide long term for his family. He never really got the playing time that many have felt he earned. He's productive off the bench, can fill in for a while as a starter and keep a good team going while doing it. Defensively, he's exposed in the outfield, but not so much as the likes of Pete Incaviglia. Landed in San Diego, where he'll be a good fourth outfielder and potent bat off the Padres' much-improved bench. A class act, and we'll be rooting for him.
2004 Even Greg Gross ran out of steam after a while. Sweeney's heyday as one of the game's best pinch-hitters was during the last presidential administration. He can drift into fifth-outfielder jobs for another year or two, but a career as a hitting coach awaits.
