2006 Troubled by shoulder woes for much of 2004, Wunsch made good on a minor-league contract and won the LOOGY job in spring training. While not as unhittable as he`d been in the past, his funky sidearm delivery still gives lefty batters fits. His ERA was done in by the performance of the relievers following him; his Fair Run Average was a very respectable 2.46. Alas, he sprained his ankle in early July and needed season-ending surgery, and later had minor surgery on his hip as well. He`ll look for work again after refusing a minor-league assignment.
2004 We love the guy too, but in spite of the low ERA, it's clear that Wunsch isn't the same pitcher that he was before undergoing Tommy John Surgery in 2001. His Frisbees were really floating on him last season, especially toward the end of the year, and he spent time on the shelf with a muscle strain. Wunsch has consistently posted very low hit rates on balls in play against him; knuckleballers have been revealed to do especially well in that department, so one wonders whether sidearmers are capable of the same magic.
2003 Damaso Marte’s strong start allowed the Sox to take their time with Wunsch’s rehab, bringing him back from rotator cuff surgery in May after a rehab stint in Triple-A. Wunsch was a reliable performer for the team down the stretch, and lefty specialists generally have nine lives, so expect to see his name popping up in box scores for the next decade or so.
2002 Relief pitchers are fungible. Wunsch was great in 2000, but when he needed rotator-cuff surgery last summer, there were plenty of candidates to take over his role. That the options the White Sox tried weren't all that effective doesn't make Wunsch more valuable than any other LOOGY. He's supposed to be healthy in the spring and will have first dibs on his old job.
2001 Kelly Wunsch is a guy we’ve been pulling for over the years, because if Mike Myers could make good money as a sidearming situational left-hander who couldn’t dent bread, then Kelly Wunsch deserved a shot. Jerry Manuel made up for all those years without a lefty reliever, using Wunsch a league-leading 83 times. If you’re a Sox fan, what’s nice about the pickup of guys like Wunsch or Singleton is that it demonstrates that the Sox are doing a good job scouting other team’s systems to find hidden value. You’d be surprised how few teams invest the time.
2000 Since he started throwing sidearm at the tail end of 1998, he's become a better pitcher. It's cost him velocity but given him better control, and he now keeps almost everything in the infield. He started the year recuperating from a broken foot, and he finished it a minor-league free agent. If you were looking for an adequate left-handed specialist, he would be a good choice.
1999 Frustrated by his injuries and a lack of development, the Brewers are considering switching him to relief. Could end up surprising some people, in that he’s good at keeping the ball low and in the infield. At worst he’ll be the new Blaise Illsley, but lefties are lefties, so he can look forward to years of spring training invites.
1998 Once a top prospect, Wunsch lost ’96 to surgery on the ulnar nerve in his left elbow. When he came back, he did not throw with the same velocity, and he tended to belt guys to reclaim the inner corner of the plate. Both he and Mike Pasqualicchio are in the same boat: they’re left-handed pitching prospects who have struggled to make it out of A-ball, although Wunsch should advance.
