2005 Franklin Nunez has a happy story to tell of his eventual recovery from shoulder surgery, but it took two years after the surgery. This was Ritchie's first year back, and while the overall numbers look bad, there was steady improvement. Check out his 16 starts at Durham, in groups of four (real, not translated), especially the RA and H/9:

By the end, he was pitching like a legitimate major league pitcher. Even so, Tampa Bay let him go as a free agent. A good no-risk signing by the Pirates.
2003 What now? Ritchie’s been on increasingly shaky ground since his 1999 breakout year, and only Steve Sparks’s tenacity kept Ritchie from being the worst starter in the majors in 2002. The pressure is off now, so look for marginally better things, but chances of a complete rebound are as a Brewer are slim.
2002 Occasionally unhittable, Ritchie became the staff’s erstwhile ace, pretty cool for someone picked up as a minor-league free agent in early 1999. More cool: Littlefield turned him into Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, and Sean Lowe. Ritchie will be the White Sox' #2 starter, providing bulk innings but little upside. Still think won-lost records mean something? Ritchie’s first half: 5-9, 4.07 ERA. Ritchie’s second half: 6-6, 4.97 ERA.
2001 Regression to the mean has taken hold, especially of Todd Ritchie's ERA, since his last two seasons were similar in most respects. He was more hittable and homer-prone in 2000 and a lot less lucky. Most Pirate fans thought they had an ace here, but part of the reason he never broke through in Minnesota is that his fastball is as straight as Alex P. Keaton. What you saw in 2000 is what you get: a back-of-the-rotation innings eater.
2000 Here’s the nicest revelation in Pittsburgh and another testament to the power of Lamont and Vukovich when it comes to pitching. That said, Ritchie threw more than 2,300 pitches this year, far more than he's thrown in any previous season, leading to shoulder tendinitis and bursitis in September. His poor strikeout rate indicates that he will regress this year. Ritchie is going to disappoint after such a great season, although he should still be a valuable #3 or #4 starter for the team in 2000.
1999 Throws hard, and appears to be improving with age. I don't think he has much of an upside, so I wouldn't have much use for him, but I can see him latching on somewhere and being surprisingly effective in a non-critical role.
1998 He’s supposed to have a great fastball, but he sure doesn’t strike out many guys with it. Better to have the fastball than not, I guess, but better still to be able to do something concrete with it besides impress scouts. Since he didn’t pitch too badly last year, he’ll get some more chances.
1997 Despite injuries, Ritchie is still considered to have the best fastball in the organization. For 1997, the Twins will be forced to keep him on the big league roster or pass him through waivers, so he’ll probably have to be kept in the bullpen.
1996  He's got a shoulder made up of rubber bands and duct tape, but the Twins are hoping that he recovers the form he had before his injuries in '93-'94.
