2009-10-07 14:30:00 (link to chat) | As a Yankee fan, please talk me off the ledge Joe Girardi has me on. The Molina start is exactly the kind of over-managing that I'm terrified off all postseason--Jeter bunting in the fifth, Coke facing Mauer in the 8th, etc... (Eli from Brooklyn) | The Molina start is a pretty stupid thing that has me gritting my teeth, but the fact of the matter is that it's a pretty small thing, too, and it's not like it's deviating from something Girardi has done all year by putting him into the mix. Last I checked, they won 103 games, so it worked out OK.
I'm far more worried about the team's lefty relief situation going into the playoffs than I am about the catching. Neither Coke nor Damaso Marte give me much confidence, and there are a fair number of key lefties they'll need to get through to win another World Championship. Despite that complaint, Girardi has shown that he deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to handling that bullpen - it might be his strongest area as a manager. (Jay Jaffe) |
2008-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | your take now on the Nady/Marte trade: was it a deal or no deal from a NY fan basepoint? (Frank from Vegas) | I think it was a good deal for the Yankees. They gave up more in volume than star potential, Nady has been very good, and he's under contract. They also picked up two losses because Joe Girardi used Damaso Marte incorrectly, and in fact injured him by over-pitching him (which he then lied about, as Pete Abraham reported), but that has nothing to do with the trade. (Steven Goldman) |
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who do you see as the front runner for the Pirates closer job? Do they have a closer in waiting in the minors? (GilGaucho from Orange, Ca) | I'd like to see Damaso Marte get the shot. Tyler Yates pitched the ninth last night, but that's only because Marte was getting the night off. If you look at the metrics, though, Marte has been their best reliever lately. The only problem with him is that he was rumored to be on the trade block. If I'm the Pirates, I keep my focus on the long-term plan and still deal him if the price is right. I don't see anyone in the minors that's a ready replacement for that role. (Jeff Erickson) |
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I am an unfortunate owner of Matt Capps (and Eric Gagne-ouch). I was lucky enough to pick up Damaso Marte before the rest of the vultures in my league plucked him up. Is he the front runner to get the nod in Capps' absence? Also, what can we expect from Josh Johnson in the second half of the year? (Brent from Scottsdale) | I'd expect nothing from Johnson - even when a pitcher comes back from TJS, there's usually a lag in his command, and that's especially true when a guy comes back earlier than expected. If you have ample room on your reserve, sure, roster him, but don't activate him until he gets a few starts in to see what's going to happen.
Marte - yes, frontrunner, but don't be surprised if there's some sort of committee at work with Yates, because Marte is a lefty. (Jeff Erickson) |
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Expect the Yankees to trade for Damaso Marte, or will they maybe give Traber a shot at the lefty specialist role? Thanks! (Tony from Brooklyn, NY) | I wouldn't bank on Traber, so I expect they'll invest some time shopping. I don't know if I'd elevate an appropriate level of interest in Marte all the way up to an expectation, but it would be worth exploring. (Christina Kahrl) |

2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | Twenty-three UBB for Young all year... And here's where you can first-guess the Yankees for not having another lefty in the pen. Not that I'm a big Royce Ring fan or anything, but this was something that was an apparent problem as early as Damaso Marte getting hurt. (Steven Goldman) |
2009-10-28 17:00:00 | 2009 WS Game One | Who had "Damaso Marte" in the "biggest ovation of Game One" pool? (Joe Sheehan) |
