2022-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given the tepid reception of Jasson Dominguez and Royce Lewis, who says “no” to a 1-for-1 trade between the two?
(Ted Lasso from Richmond)
Hmm, interesting question. I think this falls into the category of each team having way more information about their own guy and not trusting the other end of a challenge trade, but as far as guys who I don't fully trust their swings to work at a high level, Lewis has more ways he can impact the game, assuming a mostly normal return from a torn ACL, which is also not a given. (Top 101 chat w/Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-11-13 12:00:00 (link to chat)I’m tired of watching Instagram videos of Jasson Dominguez, I want hard rumors and whispers of grandeur. What do you predict his path will be in 2021?
(Flipai from Maryland)
I don't have a great answer here. He was stateside for like a week in Spring and wasn't at instructs so it's difficult to say "he's ready for A-ball" or whatever. I'd guess some time in extended to acclimate and then see where he is. Normally he'd be an obvious fit for Pulaski or SI, but welllllllll (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do we know about the development of top 100 guys like Julio Rodriguez, Jasson Dominguez, Marco Luciano, and Nolan Gorman? What level would you expect each of them to start the season if we play a full 2021 ML/MiLB?
(ironcityguys from daBurgh)
Well, we don't *know* much. You can hear some things depending on who you talk to but it's all subject to being pumped or spun without much way of verifying whether it's true. One of the things I'm most intrigued about -- and it's something I mentioned to Jeffrey Paternostro on Five & Dive yesterday -- is where these guys get assigned coming out of these player development camps. Especially the lower level types, since it's unlikely we get the short-season leagues going forward.

I'll hazard these guesses: JRod: Triple-A, Dominguez: Extended Spring Luciano: Low-A, Gorman: Triple-A. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Recent Jasson Dominguez photos have him resembling the Incredible Hulk! What are your thoughts on him moving forward and is this kid a star in the making?
(Lance from Vegas)
Dominguez's frame and physique has always caused me some concern (hence, we have always been lower on him than others in the industry). He is already fully mature at 17 years old. Buck Showalter once said, "Be careful drafting an 18-year-old with a full beard. It means he is fully developed and might not grow anymore." Be careful with Dominguez.

That said, Dominguez already has excellent tools, and, while he is a present plus to double-plus runner, I am uncertain he will retain his speed long-term with those tree-trunk legs. He has explosive bat speed, though. His hit/power upside is still plus/plus (or better) with likely enough speed long-term to provide some value on the bases. That is an excellent dynasty prospect and a possible fantasy star. (Jesse Roche)
2020-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given Jasson Dominguez’s recent bulk gains and the lack of Pauson footage, does Erick Peña have a solid argument for the top international bat from this latest J2 class?
(Joe You from Under a Cap)
Paternostro said this offseason that Pena had more of a possibility as emerging as the top player from this class than people thought, just in terms of room for development. He mentioned it in this piece: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/article/58102/the-view-from-behind-the-backstop-lets-all-meet-up-in-the-year-two-thousand-and-twenty-five/ and that was well before the video on Dominguez. That said, I don't think "lack of Puason footage" is part of the issue at all. Lack of footage doesn't mean we can't get info or that Puason is any worse than anticipated. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-07-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for doing a chat today. Who were the biggest risers and fallers in your latest top 400 dynasty prospects and why? Do you have any strategy in your dynasty leagues for prospects that are not on the 60 man (buy/sell/hold)?
(MK from Houston)
Thanks! Not many risers or fallers since there has been no baseball. Of course, the influx of recent draftees has push many players down the rankings. That said, we need tweak a few rankings upon reevaluation and in light of the lost minor league season (the ramifications of which will touch every prospect in some way). The following prospects made moves (good & bad):

Adley Rutschmann jumps Waters/Robinson due to developmental concerns for the others
Jesus Luzardo from 13 to 15 (COVID positive & Carlson jumps him)
Jasson Dominguez from 26 to 23 (up 5 spots technically w/ 2 draftees slotting in ahead)
Heliot Ramos from 24 to 28 (I prefer the upside of the guys who jumped him)
Taylor Trammell from 34 to 41 (concerned about swing)
Brett Baty from 81 to 96 (concerned about hit tool)
Isaac Paredes from 117 to 150 (concerned about offensive upside)
Colton Welker from 178 to 307 (less confidence in bat)

As for prospects not on the 60-man roster, it depends on the prospect, but I do not think it makes much of a difference to a prospect's value, especially prospects that are far away. Of course, if an upper level (AA/AAA) prospect failed to make the cut, and it is not injury-related, then it may be a sign that the organization has little confidence in that prospect. (Jesse Roche)
2020-03-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who makes it to the show first out of Jasson Dominguez and Erick Pena?
(Stylist Jen from Cutting your mom's hair)
It is so hard to say, but probably Dominguez. The Yankees tend to more aggressively push their prospects than the Royals. (Jesse Roche)
2020-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)What players gain/lose the most dynasty value if there is no season? My guesses are losers are older SP, Verlander, Scherzer, Morton, Greinke, Hamels,etc.. and gaining value would be the youngest spects who their value is tied to physical projection and maturity, and years away from MLB like Jasson Dominguez, Erik Pena, Acosta, etc...
(brad from NJ)
Dominguez is essentially mostly filled out, so you can't group him in with projectable types like Pena just because he's young and signed recently. I also think you're overlooking that all of those guys are missing a year of development in terms of facing live pitchers in a competitive environment. I also think the older pitchers are going to avoid some wear and tear on their arms, mitigating some of the age-related attrition. Not all, to be clear, and broadly your thesis is fair but there are reasons why this isn't uniformly bad/good for those types. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-03-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)At the risk of being press scrum cliche, 'talk to me about Jasson Dominguez.' But seriously...I'm facing a dynasty rebuild in a 16-team points league where each team has ~5 prospects, is this a Dude who you would be trying to rebuild around (insofar as you target 17-year olds to build around)?
(Jojo from SD)
That parentheses at the end is kind of a big deal. I wouldn't be looking to build around someone like that, necessarily, especially with only five prospect slots. He's a big deal. We ranked him really aggressively for no stateside looks, but is the gap between him and say, Erick Pena, _that_ big right now? I guess some will say yes, but I don't see it that way. Lots of other prospects I'm interested in with different profiles/risk along with Dominguez (who I think will be very good). (Craig Goldstein)
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give me 5 names that you think could jump to the number 1 prospect 2021 season?
(Luciano from San Francisco)
I will try to avoid the obvious (top-10). Outside our top-10: Marco Luciano, Royce Lewis, CJ Abrams, Jasson Dominguez, and Bobby Witt Jr. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)1st pick in a returning, 16-team, keep-all, super-hyphenated, deep dynasty league. Andrew Vaughn, Adley Rutschman, Jasson Dominguez, CJ Abrams all available (the highest available four from BPs 2020 Top 101 Dynasty). I feel like Vaughn is the "safest" pick in terms of reaching his floor-to-ceiling range, is closest to the bigs, and catchers are weird. So my question is essentially this: which Jesse rolled out of bed this morning? The pragmatic, wise-beyond-his-years Uncle Jesse who reassures me that Vaughn is a solid play and future cornerstone that won't cost me the family farm? Or the cowboy renegade Jesse James who's about to talk me into going into my draft guns-a-blazing while dreaming on The Martian hype?
(BC from Fort Myers, FL)
Love the question! I do not think there is a clear answer this year. I prefer Vaughn due to his blend of upside/proximity. However, Dominguez is a fine pivot if you like throwing caution to the wind. He has the most upside among prospects in this FYPD. It is a really personal decision imo. Look in the mirror and ask yourself: who am I? Hopefully that will aid in deciding between Vaughn and Dominguez (I would not consider the other two absent 24+ teams or 2-catchers--Rutschman--or categories that specifically favor Abrams). (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)OK, all jokes aside, how good do you think Jasson Dominguez can be?
(Jasson Dominguez Stan from Jasson Dominguez, NY)
Dominguez has had FV grade creep over the past year. I think he has 30/30 upside, but he is already pretty physically maxed out, which is a big reason why everyone loves him. At 16, he already flashes plus power and double-plus speed. That said, my realistic ceiling projection for him is .280/.350/.510/30/25, which may even be lighter than how some view him. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dynasty keeper league....available farm guys are Jasson Dominguez, D. Carlson, S. Howard, G. Rodriguez, Torkelson, Hancock, Austin Martin, Bleday, R. Greene. Please rank...Thanks
(Mr. Fister from Arlington)
Open universe!

(1) Dylan Carlson, (2) Jasson Dominguez, (3) Spencer Torkelson, (4) Austin Martin, (5) Emerson Hancock, (6) J.J. Bleday, (7) Spencer Howard, (8) Riley Greene & (9) Grayson Rodriguez (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Forever dynasty, 12tm... roto - I’ve been offered his Eloy Jimenez for my Jasson Dominguez. What are your thoughts?
(Harry from Montana )
Take Eloy and run! (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Give me 5 prospects that have potential to breakout the way Julio Rodriguez, Marco Luciano, Kristian Robinson, etc did... thanks in advance!
(Frankie from NY NY)
Those three were highly regarded J2 signees, so, in a similar vein, I'd say Alexfri Planez and Johan Rojas from the 2017 class; Noelvi Marte, Orelvis Martinez, Misael Urbina, Luis Matos, and Jeferson Espinal from the 2018 class; and Jasson Dominguez, Erick Pena, Robert Puason, Luis Rodriguez, Maximo Acosta, Reginald Preciado, Bayron Lora, and Hedbert Perez from the 2019 class. (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Jasson Dominguez's speed holds up as he gets older? And if you think it will fall some as he is already stocky, is that why you have Abrams over him?
(Blake from Phoenix)
I have two Jasson Dominguez/CJ Abrams questions in the Q and I'll handle them back-to-back.

Dominguez is listed as 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, and may be a bit heavier than that. His frame does have a stocky look, but he arguably has double-plus speed at present and he is already pretty physically mature. The risk of him filling out and losing speed is less than similar J2 prospects.

Abrams is over Dominguez on the dynasty top 101, and in our Top 50 FYPD rankings, because I was overruled. I personally prefer Dominguez and his .300/30/30 dream upside to Abrams, who I also love and value highly. Folks here at BP prefer Abrams because, simply, they have seen what he can do in person, and his upside is really not too much different than Dominguez's. The knocks against Dominguez are he has yet to play a pro game, has extreme proximity, and reports on J2 guys are often suspect. Though, the recent success of Wander Franco, Julio Rodriguez, and Marco Luciano does provide more confidence in reports surrounding The Martian. (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the process for deciding how and where to rank a new J2 prospect like Jasson Dominguez who hasn't played any games yet?
(Ashley from Albuquerque)
Personally (and I say this on the podcast) I don't think we should be ranking any of these guys. Most of these lists are apples to oranges comparisons in a lot of cases (Something Jarrett wrote about at length in our Midseason 50 content package), but comparing Dominguez to Sean Murphy isn't even the same school of botany. That said more people would complain if we didn't rank him, so you try to talk to people that saw him in domestic instructs if they came over. (This was also a massive problem with Luis Robert) a couple years ago too. (Top 101 Prospects Chat)
2020-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)What separates Jasson Dominguez from Robert Puasson by such a large margin? Both signed for $5.1M and were generally ranked 1-2 on list of international prospects, but Dominguez shows up 38, 46, and 54 on the three major publications, while Puasson does not make any of the lists.
(Tim from SLC)
I can't speak for other places, but for us it was confidence intervals based on the information we could get. (Top 101 Prospects Chat)
2019-11-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)Jasson Dominguez is getting so much buzz and I'm worried that he is more Kevin Maitan than . Am I just an anxious person or are there legitimate concerns?
(Jon from Warshington)
I mean, look we ranked Maitan Top 101 off signing and got burned. We weren't the only ones. It was pretty obvious there were issues as soon as he came stateside and Uncle Jack saw him the Appy. We will probably do it again with Dominguez and check back in Pulaski next summer. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)Any idea when players such as Jasson Dominguez typically get added to player pools on sites such as CBS? Missed out on Luis Robert and don’t want it to happen again. Thank you
(Kkelly from IL)
I have not seen a particularly consistent standard applied, myself. Sometimes this happens when the players actually start accumulating stats with affiliates but on plenty of occasions I've seen relatively well-regarded prospects not get added to systems until seemingly random points. My recommendation would be to introduce a league rule where any guys signed after a certain date - e.g. the draft onwards - aren't eligible to be picked up until your league's draft in the offseason. (Darius Austin)
2019-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank for dynasty purposes: Julio Rodriguez, Kristian Robinson, Marco Luciano, Jasson Dominguez, Ronny Mauricio, George Valera. Thank you!
(Gerald from Bama)
Look, we can put these guys in an order now that's probably different next week or in the next hour because they're generally of the same ilk. Uber talented, far from the majors, high tools, with a billion different paths to success or failure. It's hubris.

Also Ben and Bret did it already: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/51490/the-midseason-top-50-dynasty-prospects/ (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-09 12:00:00 (link to chat)Where would you rank Jasson Dominguez in the prospect rankings?
(Dave from CT)
So here's the thing. I haven't seen him play. Our staff hasn't seem him play. He hasn't really even been in showcases since he was 14. Teams have vested interest in hiding these dudes from other teams scouts after they agree to deals early. The Tigers admitted as much with Roberto Campos, for just one example. Could I or someone else on staff get a reasonably high-ranking Yankees PD person to give us useable info on background. Yeah, that's a thing that could happen. I don't see that by itself as enough to put a ranking down on a player. The backbone of our work is live looks. Now, sometimes we have to rank a guy we don't have a recent look at. Marco Luciano's blurb covers some of the pitfalls of that. But we didn't rank Luciano last year (despite strongly suspecting this outcome) for the same reason we won't rank Dominguez this year. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Where would you rank Jasson Dominguez in the prospect rankings?
(Jon from NYC )
Well, I wouldn't, I guess. We don't rank June draftees or J2 signings in our midseason list and Jasson poses a special kind of problem. The reports on the tools are sublime, but he also hasn't really played meaningful competition in a LONG time. That makes it hard to evaluate tools in context, and context is why we try to wait to slot these guys in to our offseason lists. We just like to gather a little more info. To whet you're appetite though a source told me "Physical freak and has all the tools."

I expect he'll be good, but I think ranking him without some additional info/looks isn't going to get us anywhere. (Craig Goldstein)
