2021-03-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Craig, awesome forum. My question is about Tyler Soderstrom. I am attempting to process what he will be like in 3-4 years from now. Do you see him as a catcher longterm? If not, do you project him to carry enough bat for any of the other potential landing spot positions? Thanks in advance, Mike
(meswan from Texas)
Hey Mike, thanks for the kind words. Earnestly I hadn't done a chat in a while because of some schedule stuff but also, they were pretty quiet late last year, so thanks for showing up!

I think the tough part with catchers who can hit is that when they can actually really hit, it behooves teams to get them out from behind the plate, where the bat can flourish. I think Soderstrom falls into that group. He might be able to catch but I wouldn't be surprised if he's elsewhere by the time he hits the majors. But yeah, the bat could be really good. (Craig Goldstein)
2021-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)With a prospect like Tyler Soderstrom, what weight, positive or negative, is given in prospect evaluation to the fact that his father was a major leaguer? Thanks.
(Old Timer from Raleigh)
I don’t think it matters broadly on like a skill/tool level, but I recall Brian Bannister once saying that the biggest benefit he got from his Dad was being able to call him on the road and talk about where he was developmentally and what was happening and have someone who could understand and talk about it with him. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2021-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)There are some very positive reports on Tyler Soderstrom’s bat. How similar is his offensive ceiling to Veen and Hassell?
(Jon from CA)
Little more power potential than Hassell, but less present/future hit, probably a step below Veen’s bat. I wouldn’t be shocked if with a “full” 2021 and more positional clarity he isn’t far off Hassell at least as a prospect. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2021-01-21 12:00:00 (link to chat)If Tyler Soderstrom was being developed as a non- catcher position player, would he make the top 101? thanks
(Old Timer from Raleigh)
I think we more or less have him projected as one. He's a Just Missed as well, but more just because of the limited pro track record. If we really thought he was a catcher, he probably makes it, as you could certainly make a case that he was the second best bat in the prep class behind Veen. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2021-01-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think are the biggest sleepers to have breakout years. I am looking for guys that are outside the top 100.
(J.A. from Vancouver)
I can always tell when it's Dynasty Draft season. See above, if we are expanding it to outside the 100, let's throw in Quinn Priester, Tyler Soderstrom, and Pete Crow-Armstrong (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-06-19 12:00:00 (link to chat)More often than not, with later first round picks the A's tend to go for college players. This year they went against that trend with HSer Tyler Soderstrom at 26. Did the A's steal march on the rest of the league with this pick? Seems the advanced bat would have gone higher. Many thanks.
(Old Timer from Raleigh NC)
I think they identified the best overall talent on the board at that point and determined the bonus number was feasible with the rest of their draft plans. My feeling about prep catchers are well known (don't draft prep catchers) but Soderstrom probably isn't a catcher long term so you are really just taking the bat. If you view him more as a 3B/OF prep bat (albeit one that can maybe catch here and there for you in a robot ump era) I don't know if he's all that different from Walker with similar risks in the long term hit tool projection. He was far from my favorite prep bat option in the draft, but I was surprised he fell to 26. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
