2005 It's just fun when a guy who'd been left behind in the previous century comes out of nowhere to win a job in spring training. Perisho held lefties to a .207 average and was effective enough against righties that he could pitch complete innings where necessary. The difference in value between a guy like that and, say, Mike Myers, is significant.
2003 In 86 major league games, Perisho has a 4–14 record and a 7.07 ERA, this despite a good arm and four solid pitches. He was converted to relief to try and salvage his career, but it may not work. Signed by Tampa Bay to a minor league deal in November, Perisho will get several more chances to realize his potential.
2002 See Heath Murray. The Tigers picked up Perisho, whose 7.37 ERA was unacceptable for even the Rangers, and were apparently surprised when he continued to suck raw eggs for them. Eventually teams will stop the self-immolation that comes with carrying an extra lefty. Tony La Russa’s success as a manager has come despite, not because of, his trendsetting penchant for one-batter specialists.
2001 You'd think there'd be a limit on the number of guys in one organization who post ghastly ERAs in a season. Someone always gets bushwhacked for an 18.00 ERA or something in a couple of innings, but Texas really ran the table on these guys in 2000. Perisho put up his 7.37 ERA in 105 innings. Try to spin that in arbitration. Often Matt faced batters that neither reached base nor scored! He has good enough stuff to succeed but has to improve his control 10%.
2000 Perisho had a very encouraging 1999. He struggled through the first half after rotator-cuff surgery the previous August: on July 4 he had a 6.13 ERA and was coughing up about 11 hits per nine innings. Then he finished the season with a flourish, posting a 2.82 ERA and allowing just 6.8 hits per nine innings in his last 60 2/3 innings with Oklahoma, followed by a terrific start--12 strikeouts in six shutout innings--for the Rangers. He's out of options, so he'll be given every chance to make the big-league club in spring training, probably as a fifth starter.
1999 Perisho bombed in his first two shots at the majors, giving up 51 runs in 50 innings. But he had a nice season at AAA, so he'll be back. He'll almost certainly compete for the fifth starter job in spring training. If he wins it, I suspect he'll struggle, at least at first. Two worrisome characteristics of his '98: his walk rate stayed high, while his K rate took a dive.
1998 Sent to Texas for Mike Bell. He hasn’t really had success above Double-A yet, and was rushed up to Anaheim during a fit of desperation. Needs to start the season at Oklahoma City. Without a good fastball, he’s going to get knocked around for a while. Check back in 1999.
