2003 A 2001 Rule 5 pick from Seattle, Farnsworth wasn’t close to being ready for the majors, as evidenced by the fact that he allowed 100 hits in 70 innings and walked more hitters than he fanned. His development has been retarded after missing almost two whole seasons with an elbow injury, as well as spending a year in big league garbage time when he should have been starting every fifth day in Triple-A. It’s highly unlikely he’ll spend much time in Detroit this season after being outrighted to Toledo in November and performing poorly in the AFL.
2001 The Mariners’ second-round draft choice in 1996 is about two years ahead of Cloude in making friends with his new ulnar collateral ligament. Jeff Farnsworth saw his low-90s heat and command of his curveball resurface at New Haven and built on that progress with an outstanding stint in the Arizona Fall League, posting the best strikeout rate in the desert. He could earn a spot as a long reliever in 2002, as he’s the type of hard thrower Piniella likes to have tucked away in the bullpen.
