2022-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Jeffrey and thanks for taking my question. In 2025 in your opinion, who will be the better MLB OF and Fantasy OF between Sal Frelick and George Valera coming from two completely different kinds of backgrounds?
(Marcus from Florida)
We ranked Valera significantly higher, but given the speed/stolen base gap here if you wanted to take Frelick for fantasy I'd get it, he's less volatile. He's also probably not a center fielder and I'd expect Valera to produce more with the bat given the power and OBP potential. (Top 101 chat w/Jeffrey Paternostro)
2022-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Your rating of George Valera (33) is considerably higher than other lists I have seen. Can you explain your optimism and what his path to the Guardians OF might look like. Thanks!
(Steve from MA)
We think he will get on base a lot and hit for a lot of power while being a good defender in a corner. That's the short answer. I know the swing is weird, but I think the approach and hit tool are a bit underrated too. I don't think he's really a 2022 candidate--although not impossible he rips off a year in the upper minors--but I think 2023 is a good target to get through any potential growing pains in AA/AAA. (Top 101 chat w/Jeffrey Paternostro)
2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank for dynasty purposes: Ronny Mauricio, Jordan Groshans, Orelvis Martinez, George Valera, Brennan Davis. Thank you -
(TrickDaddy14 from ForDaKids)
George Valera (157)
Brennen Davis (187)
Jordan Groshans (202)
Ronny Mauricio (210)
Orelvis Martinez (294) (Jesse Roche)
2020-05-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pure prospect question about 3 young bats with different strengths:Triston Casas, Jordyn Adams and George Valera. 15 years from now, who will have had the best big-league career? Thanks.
(CyMature from Cooperstown)
A) excellent name.
B) I'll go with Valera. He's probably the furthest away but I like his combination of potential hit/power, and position. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-03-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Best bet to receive most helium this year: Noelvi Marte, Orelvis Martinez, George Valera, Or Aaron Bracho?
(Yandy's from Diaz)
I like this one. I am going to say Orelvis because he's not as high on radars right now. Marte and Valera probably still rank higher at the end of the season though (with good reason). (Craig Goldstein)
2020-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does George Valera start the year in full season ball? Realistically, when could you see him debuting in the majors?
(Bubic Hair from In your soup)
Valera finished in Low-A so I would expect him to start there in 2020. If he progresses at a normal pace, I'd expect A/A+ in 2020, A+/AA in 2021, and AA/AAA/MLB in 2022 with a full arrival in 2023. (Jesse Roche)
2020-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jesse talk to me about George Valera, next Cleveland wunderkind or no?
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
Next Cleveland wunderkind, yes. Potential plus hit and power tools w/ precocious plate discipline. (Jesse Roche)
2019-12-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)For a nineteen-year-old middle infielder, Kendall (formerly Logan) Simmons had a really solid year in short-season ball. I know he's never gonna be a batting-average guy, but why doesn't he profile higher? Squint at his statline and George Valera's and they look almost the same, just to troll in hopes of getting an impassioned response.
(Bram from North Dakota)
He's fine. Like I get it. I had a few conversations with Wink about him over the course of short-season and list discussion. The tools are intriguing. I just don't feel strong enough that it will come together for him to the point where it really pops. (Philadelphia Phillies Top 10 Chat)
2019-11-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have thoughts on George Valera (or should we wait until the Cleveland list happens for this question)? He had a "down" year, but was so young and still walked a ton. It's hard to scout the stat line. A buy low opportunity in fantasy?
(Rusty Montana from Billings)
If someone is selling Valera, I'd be buying. There's a larger discussion on him on this week's TINO which I am editing this afternoon, btw. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-09-13 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Darryl Collins the next George Valera?
(Jemil from Pickering)
Probably not, although I didn't hate the comp as much as I thought I would. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-08-23 15:30:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better between Kristian Robinson, George Valera and Julio Rodriguez? Highest ceiling, lowest floor?
(Timothy from Maine)
Feels like we get a version of this question every week (not a complaint, just noting). They're all really fun, high-ceiling types who belong in the same bucket, which is why we ranked them in a group in the midseason list. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the deal with George Valera? Apparently he is not injured, yet he is sitting more often than he is playing. Considering that he missed most of last season with an injury, it seems like the Indians would like him to play as much as possible for his development.
(cracker73 from Florida)
He's still so young, I'm not really that concerned with trying to ease him into full-season ball (although I would like it if the statline was a little better). (Mark Barry)
2019-08-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)Three sluggers in lower minors: George Valera, Andrew Vaughn, Triston Casas. Who will have the best career, assuming no injuries or asteroid collisions? Thanks!
(Stir-Crazy in Storrs from CT)
I'd assume Vaughn will slot in a fair bit ahead of Valera on our 2020 101. That's on the strength of the floor/safety though, you could certainly argue Valera has more upside with the bat. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any concern with George Valera's L/L splits? A bit worried that he's already having trouble at such a low level.
(John from The Land)
No, not at all. He's only 18 years old and should be expected to, and allowed, to struggle a bit in his development. If he's still struggling against lefties in a couple years, then we should talk. (JP Breen)
2019-07-31 12:00:00 (link to chat)Andrew Vaughn, Triston Casas, George Valera: three young hitters in the lower minors. Who has the highest ceiling? Who can reach his ceiling? ps Gooseberries under-rated. We grow them and raspberries. Mixing the two in jam, baking or syrup for yogurt or ice cream: high ceiling, high floor.
(CyMature from Cooperstown Rest Home)
Valera, Vaughn, Casas for me if you're talking real life and not fantasy and purely ceiling. Vaughn probably has the lowest gap between ceiling and current state just because his flaws aren't going anywhere and he really just has to hit (like hell) to do it. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-19 12:00:00 (link to chat)Riley Greene looks awfully good, so far. Who would expect to move faster through the minors, Greene or George Valera?
(andy from fresno)
Generally top prep picks move faster than top IFA guys, but Valera has a very advanced hit tool and either could set their own timetable more or less. Pretty hyped to get a full six games on Greene starting this weekend. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank for dynasty purposes: Julio Rodriguez, Kristian Robinson, Marco Luciano, Jasson Dominguez, Ronny Mauricio, George Valera. Thank you!
(Gerald from Bama)
Look, we can put these guys in an order now that's probably different next week or in the next hour because they're generally of the same ilk. Uber talented, far from the majors, high tools, with a billion different paths to success or failure. It's hubris.

Also Ben and Bret did it already: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/article/51490/the-midseason-top-50-dynasty-prospects/ (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-11 23:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on George Valera?
(Jerry from Charleston)
Valera's just got a sweet, SWEET swing from the left side. He's the moneyline bet to wind up with the best hit tool of the bunch, and the frame should add plenty of pop to take full advantage of it

Roots! Teacher, teacher. The Tubby's workover on the back end of this cut is freakin' murdah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q-iHwjRQWk (Wilson Karaman)
2019-07-11 23:00:00 (link to chat)I've noticed that across a number of midseason lists including BP's, three outfielders from the 2017 J2 signing period are pretty consistently being lumped closely together: Julio Rodriguez, Kristian Robinson, and George Valera. If you had to identify something about each player that stands apart the other two, what would you say?
(Pete from Illinois)
Ah, bunch of Valera in the queue, I meant to answer this one. Re: the other two, Robinson's just a straight-up physical monster, and he's shown an advanced ability to bring well-advanced power into games already in the NW League. If it all comes together his is probably the highest ceiling of the three. Rodriguez we just ran a piece on a few days ago, so I'll point you to Keanan and Ben's work on him: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/51409/top-50-spotlight-julio-rodriguez/ (Wilson Karaman)
2019-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Julio Rodriguez or George Valera? Hunter Greene or Eric Pardinho?
(in121162 from Bandon)
Pardinho for me. The other one is a toss up. I'll go with Rodriguez for now. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-07-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)Marco Luciano - jumps up rankings like Franco did last year?
(Dan from NY )
I don't know if he gets to top ten prospect in baseball, but otherwise yes. George Valera, D'Shawn Knowles, and Wilderd Patino are the other guys I could see getting a rocket up their ass come Novemberish. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank these hitters in a dynasty format? Ronnie Mauricio, Kristian Robinson, Julio Rodriguez, Jasson Dominguez, Marco Luciano, and George Valera... thank you!
(Nathan from Florida )
Robinson, Luciano/Rodriguez, Valera, Dominguez, Mauricio. Couldn't choose between Luciano/Rodriguez. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Am I crazy for thinking both George Valera and Kristian Robinson are going to be top 10 prospects? I know it's low A, but they are destroying the competition in a small sample.
(Peter from Durham, NC)
Yeah I think getting them to the Top 10 by the end of this year is a bit of a stretch, at this point. It is short-season ball and a week of it at that. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-06-05 21:00:00 (link to chat)Sorry El Presidente, but I have one more question ,when do we get to see our love child gorgeous George Valera and where, in your considered opinion? Thanks Bret.
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
Just a couple more weeks until we almost certainly see him in the NY-Penn League. It will be glorious. (Mr. President Bret Sayre)
2019-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)Only have a spot for one in a dynasty. Contention window 2-3 years out. George Valera, Alek Thomas, Dylan Carlson, Jazz Chisholm, Keibert Ruiz, Daulton Varsho, Nolan Jones, Trevor Larnach, Xavier Edwards, Shane Baz, Michel Baez, Or Seth Beer. Also, I wish I had 10 more roster spots
(KJ from Providence)
I'd probably go with Carlson or Larnach. Keibert is the best pure prospect here, but also might not be a huge fantasy factor. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat)Could you please rank these prospects according to their fantasy upside: Dylan Carlson, D'Shawn Knowles, Antonio Cabello, George Valera, Jesus Sanchez, and Heliot Ramos? I'm in a points league.
(cracker73 from Florida)
Valera, Carlson, Ramos, Sanchez, Cabello, Knowles I guess. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-06-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)This Year's Wander Franco? Who jumps up in the rankings?
(Ben from Chicago )
I polled some BP personalities who know way, way more about this than I do at this point, and the names I got probably won't surprise you: Kristian Robinson, George Valera, Alec Thomas. I got Everson Pereira and Brayan Rocchio as sleepers. In terms of two dudes I like, go with Julio Rodriguez and Marco Luciano. Also, look at what Jaren Durran is doing! The real answer, of course, is no one, but that's boring. (Ben Carsley)
2019-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is the upside of D'Shawn Knowles? Does he have power potential? Is he comparable to George Valera?
(cracker73 from Florida)
He's a guy that should be listed on all those "who is the next hot prospect" lists, if he's not already. He's a different profile of player than Valera and doesn't have the same power potential. He's a smaller guy but has the bat speed to make pitchers pay. More of a top of the order type than Valera looks to be. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-20 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who's this Year's Wander Franco - Jumps up in the rankings big time
(Scott from CT)
This is unknowable until it happens, but your best candidates haven’t changed. George Valera, Marco Luciano, D’Shawn Knowles (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-05-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is this year's George Valera?
(Flex from San Diego)
I honestly want to know what this even means. George Valera played six games of complex-league ball last year. He's toolsy and a really interesting guy who I obviously think is going to be very good but what on god's green earth does "this year's George Valera" even constitute? (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm going to have to drop 1 or 2 of these prospects in my dynasty league, so could you rank them by upside? Jesus Sanchez, Drew Waters, O'Neil Cruz, Heliot Ramos, George Valera, Tirso Ornelas, Antonio Cabello. Thanks
(cracker73 from Florida)
some of the upside factor depends on what your league has as categories. If it's a points league for examples steals don't matter as much and it changes the calculus because they're so hard to come by otherwise. I'd go: Valera, Ramos, Cruz, Waters, Cabello, Ornelas, Sanchez today but I'd probably give you a different answer next week. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-05-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jeff can you tell me when and where George Valera will make his debut this year? Thanks for the chat.
(boatman44 from Liverpool)
There's always a few guys being held back from MWL until the weather gets better. He could be one of them, although I didn't hear that specifically. I also don't have an update on health or what not, so I can't really speculate on when here. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-05-01 12:00:00 (link to chat)How much stock should we put in early season assignments for young prospects? Is someone like Julio Rodriguez (even though he's hurt) that much better than a guy like George Valera since one started in A+ and the other in extended spring training?
(Alex from Austin)
It might tell you something if it's within the same org, although not a ton. Comparing two different orgs probably won't tell you much. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is this year's Acuna or Wander Franco - Prospect who comes out of no where to jump up in the rankings?
(Aaron from ATL)
Wouldn't we all like to know? Kristian Robinson? Ronny Mauricio? Marco Luciano? D'Shawn Knowles? George Valera? Antonio Cabello?

Franco was the top international prospect so it kinda depends on your definition of "out of nowhere" (Craig Goldstein)
2019-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Happy Hump Day! I’m seeking 5 of your best low-level bets to become stars... The Ronny Mauricio’s of the world. Who you got?
(Roger from Baltimore)
Speaking of Mauricio, we're always looking for our next fix, huh? Just to throw some names out there, I like Jhon Torres, George Valera, D'Shawn Knowles, Shervyen Newton, and Sherten Apostel. I don't know if they're my "best bets" but definitely guys I'm following. If you want a fun name to track, try Darling Florentino. He's a baby and in full-season, so struggling but a toolsy 3B with flashes of power and hit. Plus his name is Darling Florentino. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-04-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like more, George Valera or Julio Rodriguez? Seem fairly similar and big potential helium guys for this season.
(Alex from Austin)
I've changed my mind a few times just considering this question, if that tells you anything. I think I'd go with Rodriguez right now, but that might be recency bias since we haven't seen Valera this year yet. (Craig Goldstein)
2019-02-06 21:00:00 (link to chat)I've noticed a trend that George Valera is pretty consistently a top 50 name on fantasy prospect lists and generally outside of the top 100 on regular lists. Can you comment on what might cause such a wide discrepancy?
(Carlo from Chicago)
IRL prospect writers don't really put too much stock into complex league corner outfielders (I don't think Valera will end up sticking in center). For us, we just want the bat, and he's got the goods. -BS (Dynasty 101 Chat w/ Ben Carsley and Bret Sayre)
2019-02-14 12:00:00 (link to chat)Could you name a few of your favorite non-top 100 guys?
(Charlie from Santa Clara)
Sure. Off the top of my head, D'Shawn Knowles, Cole Winn, Daniel Lynch, George Valera, Roasny Contreras, Blaze Alexander, Lazarito, (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-02-18 16:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank these long term dynasty upside prospects...Kristian Robinson, George Valera, Luis Garcia (Was), Luis Garcia (Phi), Julio Rodriguez, Marco Luciano, Nolan Jones. Thanks a bunch!
(Turd Ferguson from Jeopardy)
I'd probably go Garcia (WAS), Valera, Robinson, Luciano, Garcia (PHI), Jones, Rodriguez. The first Garcia is ahead by quite a bit. The last four are pretty closely grouped, and I wouldn't complain if you flip-flopped them. (Kevin Jebens)
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Not enough of a sample to rank George Valera?
(Squirtle from Toronto)
If we were doing a pref list of swings he'd have made it easily. Yeah. I expected him to torch the complex, get to Mahoning where I'd make a point to catch him and he'd get on. Didn't happen. I expect it just delayed the inevitable. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-12-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on the Cleveland's George Valera?
(Johnny from OH)
This is the kind of guy it's hard to have a take on, because even finding someone who has seen him would take a decent bit of time and effort. I know he's a seven-figure kid from the Bronx who signed as a J2 out of the DR, I know that he was impressive during XST, and I know he missed most of the public-facing season with a broken hamate. I expect he'll be in rookie ball this year. (Jarrett Seidler)
