2011-01-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Angel Berroa will get in on his first ballot when it is time, or will it take a few ballots to get him his plaque?
(achaik from Maine)
Fortunately, he's not eligible yet, having failed to reach the minimum requirement of playing in 10 major league seasons. And even in some of those seasons where he played, he simply failed. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Girardi and Cashman's work this year? Overall I like the duo, but watching Jeter bunt in the 5th inning or Cody Ransom remaining on this team is not very encouraging...
(Eli from Brooklyn)
While I've been a big supporter in the past, Cashman's roster work at protecting A-Rod borders upon total f-ing incompetence. Anybody who rosters Angel Berroa for more than 48 hours deserves to be the GM of the Nationals, and anyone who can't come up with a better alternative than Cody Ransom in the two months since he went on the DL deserves to be the GM of the Astros.

Girardi's done a decent job with the hand he's been dealt. He's finally got a functional bullpen thanks to the work of Hughes and Aceves, he's gotten productive stretches from both Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera, and his failure to rest Rodriguez adequately can be seen as a response to the craptastic options Cashman's provided him with. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)To Derek Lowe's chagrin, is there any reason the Dodgers wont have the best up the middle infield defense in baseball this year? Martin is more than solid, Hudson, though overrated, is still a top line 2b and Furcal is near gold glove level. How much of a help will they be to the kiddie corps?
(Silv from NY, NY)
Keep in mind that much of Hudson's good defensive stats are generated by his work on balls in the air. Like Derek Jeter, he has very good range going back on balls. He's a good infielder otherwise, but the numbers would lead you to believe he's Frank White. He's not.

With that said, this team had Angel Berroa and Jeff Kent up the middle at times last year. This is much better. A good defense helps you develop pitching by encouraging early-count outs, reducing pitches out of the stretch and getting guys off the field quickly. The Dodgers have helped themselves in more ways than one. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-03-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any chances the yankees sign Esteban German now that he's an FA?
(glenihan from nyc)
I think it's worth a try, as he's a more useful player than Angel Berroa (though not a shortstop, a strike against any U-guy). I'm troubled by the decay in his walk rate last year. (Steven Goldman)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Can you say anything to make me feel better about the Dodgers? Angel Berroa? Are you kidding me?! Any chance Colletti is fired during the season?
(jtrichey from Indianapolis)
While I personally feel that trading for Berroa is the type of catastrophically dangerous action that calls for an instant show of violent aggression to force a regime change, I doubt Colletti gets fired during the season, Bavasi-style. But I do think it's coming. The Dodgers lead the majors with the highest $ and % of payroll lost to the DL, and the guys who are filling up that DL -- Furcal, Andruw, Nomar, Schmidt -- are Stupid Flanders' marquee free agent signings. It's tough to think he's going to dodge the bullet if the Dodgers finish at .500 or below because of all that. (Jay Jaffe)
