2007 Miguel Asencio is a former Rule 5er and Tommy John survivor who was the vigorish in the Jason Jennings trade. He`s mostly indistinct from Ezequiel Astacio or Wandy Rodriguez, but he could possibly become a relief asset for the Astros.
2004 Asencio was the Royals' first starter to go down, and his loss became more and more painful as the team entered areas on its depth chart that it didn't know existed. A year after he was rushed into service as a Rule 5 pick, Asencio made significant strides before being felled by bone chips, reversing his strikeout-to-walk ratio and cutting his home-run rate significantly. He successfully rehabbed in September and should be in the rotation this season. While Affeldt a lot of the hype, Asencio (who's more than a year younger) is a breakout candidate of his own.
2003 The best “free talent” acquired by Baird, Ascencio was a Rule 5 pick who went into the rotation on May 21st and never left. The command and deception of his changeup borders on the preternatural. He reminds me of Johan Santana in 2000, who like Ascencio was a 21-year-old pitcher who struggled after he was plucked out of A-ball in the Rule 5 draft. Two years later, Santana might become one of the best young starters in the league. Ascencio is probably a year away from that kind of success himself, so the Royals would be well-advised to send him to Triple-A for at least a half-season to complete his minor league apprenticeship.
2002 The Phils are high on Asencio, with good reason: At age 19, he already has three major-league quality pitches: a hard fastball with good movement, a good curve, and a sharp slider. Asencio has two drawbacks so far, but only one is within his power to fix. Asencio’s control needs improvement, something that will likely come with age. Asencio’s workload, however, needs more improvement; if the Phils keep pushing him eight to nine innings, they’ll be lucky if he can go two innings by the time he reaches the majors.
