2003 What use is a soft-tossing lefty with a reverse platoon split in a big league bullpen? Haney isn’t the worst pitcher in the league, but he isn’t good enough to shoulder an important role, and at his age he’s unlikely to improve. Haney saw some of the middle-relief situations that by rights should have gone to Willie Banks.
2001 Chris Haney staged a great comeback, coming off the surgeon’s table, to log a fine half-season after having a nerve in his elbow relocated in April. His struggles in ’97 and ’98 resulted from non-arm injuries. He’s always known how to dish slop, so he’s a better bet to be a useful fourth or fifth starter than Steve Avery is.
2000 Haney lost time in 1997 to non-arm injuries, including a strained hamstring and a broken ankle. He feels the Royals rushed him back in 1998, producing an ugly year. Considering that, he may earn another shot. The Indians certainly could have done worse than just putting him in the rotation every fifth day.
1999 Damn your eyes, Jazayerli. Your team would stick me with having to write the Haney comment this year. He’s a free agent, he’s injury prone, and he sucks. Next!
1998 His chance at a breakthrough season was shelved by an assortment of injuries. He’ll probably be back in the rotation to start the season, most likely at the expense of Jim Pittsley, and while he’s not someone that can be relied on for any consistency, the Royals have the luxury of enough depth in starting pitching to pull Haney if he doesn’t come back strong. He’s quite capable of turning into Butch Henry if his control continues to improve.
1997 After a potential breakout season in 1995 was derailed by back problems, Haney stayed healthy in 1996 and…and…the jury is still out. Every start he made came back as either a 7-5-2-2-0-4 gem or a 3-8-6-6-2-1 cubic zirconia. If I were a mathematician, I’d say Haney’s career lies at the edge of chaos; he simply can’t sustain last year’s performance for long. Either he learns to throw his pitches on the corners of the plate and turns into Denny Neagle, or he doesn’t and hitters will turn him into Charlie Hudson. A gamble, but not a bad one for the Royals to take because if he doesn’t pan out, they have half a dozen capable youngsters waiting for a rotation spot to open up.
1996  Was having a breakout season when a back injury put him out for the year. He shot through the minors, debuting with the Expos barely a year after he was drafted, and has confounded observers by struggling throughout his major league career. He may have turned the corner last year, but back injuries have a nasty habit of recurring, so I'd be leery of him.
