YearComment
2005 Fox just can't stay healthy long enough to become wealthy. Despite a career strikeout rate of more than 10 per nine innings, he has just three full seasons under his belt since making his major league debut in 1997. He's had two Tommy John surgeries and might well have had a third last year after being shut down with another elbow injury in April. A free agent on a rehab program this winter, he'll either be effective or unavailable in 2005.
2004 It may a weird genetic thing, or the result of his two Tommy John surgeries, but Fox's arm would ache last season after too much downtime. In fact, the book on him became to have him throw nearly every day, then have him toss as many as 50 warmup pitches before coming into a game. It's the same principle as sinkerballers getting better as they get more tired, except Fox isn't a sinkerballer, so chalk it to the same kind of weirdness as that night in Abilene involving Nate Silver, that Wal-Mart greeter, a mechanical bull, and a sixer of Coors. Fox's August move to Florida and subsequent strong performance after washing out in Boston earned him several off-season suitors, so he'll have a steady job in a major league pen waiting for him come spring.
2003 He of the nasty stuff spent most of the year injured. First, his elbow caved a bit, and then his cuff. Hes been moved off the 40-man roster, and its not clear where hell be, how healthy hell be, or what role hell have. It looks like the Red Sox, who knows, and setup man.
2002 After watching him miss two years with elbow problems, the Brewers are crowing about Foxs potential as a closer. Do not get carried away. Like Matt Mantei, hes an injury risk waiting for his next breakdown. The difference between the Brewers and the Marlins is that the Fish understood when to sell high, while the Brewers are talking multiyear deal. Question for Davey Lopes: why did you have one of the most unhittable relievers in the league issue seven intentional walks?
2000 Fox was working on a forkball to supplement his wicked slider before the slider blew out his elbow again. Without the slider, its likely that he won't ever return to the kind of effectiveness he had in 1998.
1999 A good example of an okay minor league starter turning into a very good major league reliever. Nearly unhittable at the start, but an inflamed shoulder shelved him in June, and he struggled through August. Fox has a plus fastball and a sharp-breaking curve, and should be a great setup man in 99.
1998 Came back from major elbow surgery in 1996 to have a decent year as a reliever. Aside from that nice story, nothing about him stands out. However, now that hes had some success, he should be able to parlay that into greater opportunity. In other words, hell be around.

2010-09-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)As much as it pains me to say this, Nick Johnson's career is pretty much effectively over now, right?
(jeffk from NYC)
No. If Chad Fox can keep showing up in camp, Johnson has years left.

Lightning round. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Love your UTK reports, indeed all your coverage, often the only reliable stuff because local reporters are generally hopeless on injuries. My question: Is there any such thing as a Second TJ? Many young pitchers (especially, I guess, if they spent college at Rice!) seem to have TJ automatically after signing their MLB deal. Does this mean they have a half-life, like a radioactive isotope? Or is there a limit to how far they can go, like a triple bypass is only supposed to be good for ten years? Are there any statistics collected on this? Thanks.
(BeplerP from New York, NY)
There have been second and even third TJs. (Scott Williamson and Chad Fox are two triples that come to mind.) There's a five year "honeymoon" period where very few TJers have another elbow problem, but there is an increased incidence in shoulder injuries. If the mechanics are bad and not fixed, by fixing the previous weak link in the kinetic chain, something else is now going to be the weak link. (Will Carroll)
