2021-03-12 15:00:00 (link to chat) | CIN has seen big improvements in SP performance in guys FIRST FULL seasons under Derek Johnson's tutelage - Sonny Gray (2019), Trevor Bauer (2020), Luis Castillo (2019), Anthony DeSclafani (2019). Gray and Castillo were All-Stars in their first full season with Johnson and Bauer won CY Young. Similar situations though, Tanner Roark and Tyler Mahle flatlined, while Wade Miley was dreadful. Still, there does seem to be a real track record of success for CIN SP working with Johnson. Could Tejay Antone or Jeff Hoffman see a "Derek Johnson-bump" in their first full seasons with the Reds? (Craig from Chicago) | I'd argue the bump for Antone has already happened and it's been pretty well-chronicled what happened there (and it was outside of the Reds pitching development system broadly speaking). I think this does illustrate the point that you are never gonna have a perfect system that is a perfect fit for a variety of arms, and you just hope to do well on balance. On Hoffman, I was probably the last guy out on him, but that was two years ago even for me. Wouldn't be shocked if he turns into a solid pen arm outside of Coors/Rockies though. 2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | With our season just about over, what do you make of the rotation next year? (Big Reds Fan from Queen City) | Losing Bauer is going to hurt, obviously, but Gray and Castillo are solid starting points for a contending rotation. I really like what I've seen out of Antone, as well, and Mahle has gotten pretty interesting over the last little stretch here. I think Cincinnati gets underdiscussed in the conversation of pitching development organizations out there. I think a lot of credit goes to Derek Johnson. (Craig Goldstein) |
2020-08-12 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thought on tj antone? Has looked good so far. Seems to have come out of nowhere (Muhammad jugdish sidney from Clayton) | Yeah I'm interested! Lucas Apostoleris ran down some of his numbers in his Up in Arms column (https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/60530/up-in-arms-cristian-javier-tejay-antone/)and they're pretty promising. The new fastball velo looks legit and the breaking balls have what you look for in high spin rates. Plus, working with the Reds pitching staff, especially Derek Johnson, is a nice benefit. I'm a fan. 2019-06-12 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Luis Castillo: ace, No. 2, or something else? (BG from Sea) | The Reds ace is a bit of a personal favorite, so I'm going to try to restrain myself. I think his stuff is electric and this season has been a huge positive development. It's possible new Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson has helped him find a consistent approach that will eliminate some of the inconsistencies that tripped him up for stretches of previous seasons.
That said, he's still very reliant on that changeup and on getting hitters to swing at things they absolutely shouldn't. Perhaps a cop-out, but I'll say he's an ace (a top 15-20 starter in the game) in several seasons, but maybe not locked into that status. (Zach Crizer) |
