2010-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good afternoon Jay! Of those currently HOF-eligible, which player had the longest career with nowhere near the stats to merit consideration for the Hall? (aka an overly long mediocre career)
(dianagramr from NYC)		On the most recent ballot, David Segui's JAWS came in about 40 points below the HOF standard at first base, a pretty wide gap. Shawon Dunston was about 56 shy, but that was before WARP's replacement level got raised; a quick check tells me he's still even further off than Segui. Among the pitchers, the worst I recall coming across was Bobby Witt, who today would be about 43 points below the average HOF starting pitcher. (Jay Jaffe)

That or they really dug his hairstyle, though if that's the case then I'm surprised that Jay Mariotti had to jump up and down to tell the world he voted for no one. 2010-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jay, since I'll be under a pile of work when the HoF announcement is made, I've tried to come up with a question that will cover every conceivable issue raised by the results: What does the (election/stagnant support/dropping off the ballot) of (Andre Dawson/Bert Blyleven/David Segui) say about the BBWAA's general attitude towards (impatient mustache aficionados/Dutch Old Masters/ill-considered bleach jobs)? Does the dramatic falling off of the ballot of (Karros/Raines/McGwire) mean baseball will change the composition of the Veterans Committee in order to better represent (the undead/people with a basic understanding of baseball/chicks who dig the long ball)?

I definitely think that the disappearance of Segui from the ballot is a shot across the bow at those ill-considered bleach jobs, and that the road to the Hall just got considerably longer for Mike Piazza, Alex Rodriguez, and Bret Boone. The disappearance of Karros from the ballot means that the VC will be changed to better accommodate the undead. (Jay Jaffe)
