2020-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)How would you rank debuters Brady Singer, Dane Dunning, Clarke Schmidt, Garrett Crochet, Kris Bubic & Cristian Javier for the future?
(The Colonel from Pasadena, CA)
I think Crochet has the highest upside but the medical concerns are legitimate. You're kind of *hoping* this is an elbow related issue and not shoulder (I know, it's a forearm strain), but that's not a great place to be. The stuff is unreal though. Otherwise:

Javier, Dunning, Singer, Schmidt, Bubic.

I kinda like all of them? Could easily flip Schmidt and Singer, imo. I wouldn't feel about about having any of these guys. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would you put Garrett Crochet in the group with Clarke Schmidt, Dane Dunning, Kris Bubic? 55 OFP?
(The Colonel from Pasadena)
I don't have a specific OFP on him, but I think the ceiling on a guy who can regularly hit triple-digits and has a plus-plus slider is higher than that, if a usable changeup (or other third pitch) develops. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)MERCY! Garrett Crochet throws gas! What are his odds of remaining a starter? And what is his OFP if he remains a starter?
(Hawk Harrelson from Chicago)
I don't want to be in a Sale situation where everyone is assuming he ends up in the bullpen, but I do think it's hard for teams to get a look at what Crochet is providing now and then opt for a mid-rotation starter probable outcome down the line. It's a reasonable, perhaps smart thing to do! But it's difficult to do.

His ceiling, as noted earlier in the chat, is considerably higher than mid-rotation starter, but that's the *likelihood* with these things because you have to build in some risk. Health risks, developmental risks, etc. Perhaps it's easier to convert to a starter in a time when that all-important third pitch is being de-emphasized, but then you shift some of the risk to "how does an elbow hold up to so many fastballs/sliders" etc. Something to think about. (Craig Goldstein)
2020-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could you put a comp on Garrett Crochet? Chris Sale starter kit?
(Squirrel Pie from Pandemic Culinary Academy)
Crochet is easily in the top 5 pitchers for me at the moment in this class. His season was delayed due to shoulder soreness and only made one start (which I need to check out). Reports have him with three potential 6 offerings (fastball, curveball, changeup) and some command issues. Obviously, the shoulder soreness is also a concern. His delivery is reminiscent of Chris Sale, but Sale is a unicorn. (Jesse Roche)
