2018 The sun-loving brother of Pale Houck, Tanner is a big, right-handed starter out of the University of Missouri, who can run his heavy fastball up to the high-90s but pitched most often in the 92-95 range as a junior. He’s got an ideal build for a starting pitcher, showed decent command as an undergrad and gets positive reviews for his demeanor on the mound. The fine folks at Baseball America labeled Houck “the second coming of Jake Peavy,” which is pretty high praise and a great sign for Sox fans and duck boat salesmen alike. So why’d Houck fall all the way to the 24th pick in last year’s draft? He lacks an impact secondary pitch at present and has a high-effort delivery, which may limit him to a bullpen role. Houck could move fast as a potential impact reliever, but he’s still got mid-rotation upside, so expect the Sox to give him at least a season to try and figure it out as a starter.

2021-06-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Craig. Could I get your thoughts on Daulton Jefferies and Tanner Houck? Do you expect to see either soon and what are your projected ceilings for both of these pitchers? Thanks!
(Jack from Mechanicsburg)
I actually like Houck quite a bit as a back-end, five-inning type starter. I don't have a ton of thoughts on Jefferies honestly. He's never been my cup of tea but I hope he can stay healthy and be something akin to what I described Houck as. (Craig Goldstein)
